Asia is not one destination. It is a collection of completely different worlds. Within the same continent, travellers can move from the neon-lit streets of Tokyo, Seoul or Singapore to ancient temples, mountain villages, tropical beaches, rice terraces, volcanic islands and some of the world's most dynamic cities.

Southeast Asia is often one of the first regions travellers consider. Timing changes the picture. Bali is driest from April to September, while on most Indonesian islands the dry season runs from May to September and the wet season from October to April. May, June and September are described as the sweet spot, whereas July and August bring the highest prices.

Further north, Japan and South Korea offer another vision of Asia. Tokyo combines technology, pop culture, food, shopping and traditional neighbourhoods. Kyoto is known for temples, shrines and gardens, while Osaka has developed a strong reputation for food and entertainment. In South Korea, Seoul brings together royal palaces, contemporary culture, nightlife, markets and modern neighbourhoods in one enormous city.

Japan changes with the season: cherry blossom arrives from mid-January in the far south, in late March to early April in central Japan and in May in Hokkaido, and autumn colours run from mid-October to mid-November. Climbing Mount Fuji, which rises to 3,776 m, is possible from July to September. South Korea offers four seasons, with cherry blossom in spring, a summer monsoon from late June to late July and autumn foliage from mid-October.

Asia also includes some of the world's great cultural journeys. Travellers may explore the temples of Angkor in Cambodia, historic cities along the Silk Road, palaces and forts across India, ancient Chinese heritage, Japanese shrines or the historic centres of Vietnam. And for nature lovers, the choices are just as wide: the Himalayas, Indonesian volcanoes, tropical jungles, tea regions, rice terraces, coral islands and Central Asian landscapes create completely different types of adventure.

The scale of that heritage is easy to measure. Japan has around 27 UNESCO sites, from Himeji Castle and ancient Kyoto to Mount Fuji; Thailand has 9, including Sukhothai and Ayutthaya; Indonesia has 10, among them Borobudur, Prambanan and Komodo; India has 45, led by the Taj Mahal; China has 60, after the Xixia Imperial Tombs were added in 2025; South Korea has 17; and Turkey, which straddles Europe and Asia, has 22, from Cappadocia and Ephesus to Göbekli Tepe.

A trip to Asia can therefore be a city break, a backpacking journey, a luxury island escape, a food-focused holiday, a trekking adventure or a multi-country itinerary.

Where to go in Asia?

Choose the right destination for your travel style

There is no single "best place in Asia". The right destination depends on what you want from your trip.

Tropical beaches and islands

For warm weather and island scenery, Asia offers countless options. Thailand has Phuket, Krabi, Koh Samui and many smaller islands. The Philippines are famous for their archipelagos, turquoise water and dramatic limestone scenery, while Indonesia offers Bali as well as many less visited islands.

The Maldives are strongly associated with lagoons, coral reefs and resort islands. Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Vietnam can be particularly interesting for travellers who want to combine beaches with cities, food, culture and inland exploration.

Check the coast before you book. Thailand's Andaman coast around Phuket and Krabi is wettest from May to October, while the Gulf coast around Koh Samui is drier from June to September and rainier from October to December. The Similan and Surin islands close each year from mid-May to mid-October, so confirm dates with the national park authorities.

Cities and modern Asia

Some travellers come to Asia primarily for its cities. Tokyo can easily fill an entire trip with neighbourhoods, museums, restaurants, shopping, nightlife and day trips. Seoul offers a different combination of historic palaces, cafés, shopping districts and contemporary Korean culture. Bangkok mixes temples, street food, markets, nightlife and modern shopping areas.

Singapore offers yet another atmosphere, with Marina Bay, diverse neighbourhoods and a food scene shaped by Malay, Chinese, Indian and other influences. Kuala Lumpur, Taipei, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Hong Kong can also serve as excellent gateways into Asia.

South Korea's capital region is home to about half of the country's 51 million people, and Seoul is a good example of how Asian megacities work as trips of their own, with fast rail, dense neighbourhoods and some of the world's fastest internet.

Culture, temples and history

Asia has an extraordinary concentration of historic sites and traditions. Cambodia's Angkor region, Kyoto's temples, the palaces and monuments of India, ancient Chinese cities, Vietnamese imperial heritage and Central Asian Silk Road centres can each justify an entire journey.

A cultural trip to Asia does not have to focus only on famous monuments. Local neighbourhoods, traditional markets, regional architecture and everyday customs often become some of the most memorable parts of the experience.

Some of the most iconic places repay a closer look. In India, the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort were inscribed in 1983 and Khajuraho and Hampi in 1986. In South Korea, the Haeinsa temple keeps around 80,000 woodblocks carved between 1237 and 1248. In Turkey, Göbekli Tepe, occupied from about 9300 to 7500 BCE, is the oldest known monumental architecture and predates farming.

Mountains, nature and adventure

Asia is equally suitable for travellers who prefer the outdoors. The Himalayas make Nepal one of the great trekking destinations. Northern Vietnam combines mountains and terraced landscapes. Indonesia offers volcanic hiking, while Sri Lanka brings together highlands, tea-growing regions, wildlife and beaches. India adds another scale. Kaziranga National Park shelters more than 2,600 greater one-horned rhinoceroses, the Sundarbans form the world's largest mangrove forest, and the best time for most of the north is October to March. In Indonesia, volcano hikes such as Bromo, Ijen and Rinjani are best done in the dry season.

Food as part of the journey

For many travellers, eating is one of the main reasons to travel through Asia. Japanese ramen and sushi, Thai curries, Vietnamese pho, Korean barbecue, Indian regional cuisines, Malaysian food courts and Indonesian dishes represent only a small part of the continent's culinary diversity. Night markets, street food and small family-run restaurants can become as important as the landmarks themselves.

Every country has its own signatures. China is usually described through eight great cuisines, including Sichuan, Cantonese and Hunan, with Beijing roast duck and the street snacks of Xi'an. In India, the north favours thali, tandoori and biryani, Rajasthan has dal baati churma, and the south leans towards dosas, idlis and coconut.
