Mosques, a water village, rainforest and calm

Mosques that glow on the water

The Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque and its golden dome are mirrored in a lagoon where a replica ceremonial barge sits. At sunset the effect is striking.

An entire village on stilts

Kampong Ayer, in the heart of the capital, lines up houses, schools and mosques above the river. You discover it by water taxi, at river level.

Borneo's rainforest, well preserved

Ulu Temburong National Park protects primary forest with a canopy walkway. A bridge now links this once-isolated district to the rest of the country.

A calm trip away from the crowds

Few visitors, short distances and welcoming people: Brunei can be seen in a few days and combines easily with neighbouring Sarawak or Sabah.

Bandar Seri Begawan, Kampong Ayer, mosques and Temburong

A trip to Brunei is built around Bandar Seri Begawan, the capital, from where you can reach the mosques, the water village and the markets in a day, then head to the Temburong rainforest for a night or two. Distances are short, so you can see everything without rushing.

Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, jewel of the capital

With its pale marble minarets and gold-covered dome, this mosque is the symbol of Bandar Seri Begawan. It stands beside a lagoon where a replica ceremonial barge rests, giving superb reflections at sunrise and sunset. Visits take place outside prayer times, in clothing that covers shoulders and knees.

Kampong Ayer, the village on the water

Facing the capital's waterfront, Kampong Ayer is a cluster of villages linked by walkways where thousands of people live above the river. A water taxi is all you need to cross over and see the houses, schools and small shops up close. It is one of the best ways to grasp the story of a country born beside the water.

Jame' Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque

Newer, this large mosque with golden domes stands out for its carefully finished interiors, coloured stained glass and gardens. It draws visitors throughout the day, although access to the inside is limited during prayers.

Ulu Temburong, the primary forest

Temburong district is home to the country's only national park, nicknamed the green jewel of Brunei. You travel by longboat from Bangar, then walk through the forest to a walkway that rises into the canopy. A research station studies the rich biodiversity here. Bring closed shoes and insect repellent.

Markets, diving and neighbourhood life

In Bandar Seri Begawan, evening and riverside markets are the place to try local food. Offshore, wartime wrecks and sunk former oil platforms draw divers, in water close to 30 C.

The climate is equatorial, with no truly cold or dry season: pack a light rain layer. Entry conditions depend on your nationality; check the official information from your home country before fixing dates. Watch prices to target the driest months.

Car, water taxi and driver

There are few taxis and the bus network is limited: to leave Bandar Seri Begawan, a rental car or a driver is simplest. In the capital, water taxis link the riverbanks and Kampong Ayer. Roads are good and distances short.

On Fridays, around midday prayers, many shops and restaurants close, so plan visits accordingly. For Temburong, book the forest outing ahead with a guide who arranges the boat.

Ambuyat, nasi katok and life around the mosques

The national dish is ambuyat, a sago paste rolled around special chopsticks and dipped in a tangy sauce. Nasi katok, rice with fried chicken and sambal, is the everyday meal. Almost everything is halal and alcohol is not sold; Chinese restaurants, however, offer other dishes.

Malay culture sets the tone: modest dress, shoes off before entering a mosque, easy smiles. During Ramadan, avoid eating or drinking in public during the day.
