Beach, rays, diving and sister islands

Seven Mile Beach

A long public beach of pale sand on the west coast of Grand Cayman, with calm turquoise water, hotels set back and open sunsets. The name refers to seven miles, but erosion has trimmed it to roughly five and a half.

Stingray City

Born in the 1980s, when divers fed stingrays, this North Sound site lets you stand in shallow water as rays glide between your legs: one of the best-known excursions in the Caribbean.

Diving and wrecks

All three islands offer diving, including the Kittiwake wreck off Grand Cayman and the MV Captain Keith Tibbetts off Cayman Brac. Little Cayman has a reputation for quiet diving.

Flat, wild islands

The islands are low, ringed by reef and dark fossil-coral rock called ironshore. On Cayman Brac, the Bluff cliff rises more than forty metres: the highest point in the islands.

Seven Mile Beach, Stingray City, George Town and the sister islands

Grand Cayman gets most of the visitors, but a few kilometres is enough to go from a lively beach to an almost empty coast. These are the places that deserve a spot on the itinerary, before heading out to the sister islands.

Seven Mile Beach, the Caymans' signature beach

This public beach on Grand Cayman's west coast has fine sand, clear water and gentle waves, with hotels and restaurants set back. People come to swim, paddleboard or watch the sunset, and snorkelling trips are easy to find.

Stingray City and the North Sound

The North Sound is a shallow bay of about eighty square kilometres in the north of Grand Cayman. Stingray City is here, where you share the water with rays used to boats. Trips go by boat, with crews who explain how to approach the animals.

George Town, Camana Bay and inland Grand Cayman

George Town is the cruise port and capital, with museums, shops and restaurants. At Camana Bay, the observation tower gives free 360-degree views over Seven Mile Beach and the North Sound. Inland, the Mastic Trail crosses forest, and the Cayman Turtle Centre presents local marine life.

Diving, snorkelling and reefs

Cayman waters are well known to divers: walls, coral gardens and wrecks such as the Kittiwake, sunk near Seven Mile Beach. Beginners find calm sites, and outings can be booked locally or through hotels.

The east coast, cliffs and the sister islands

East of Grand Cayman the coast is wilder, with the East End lighthouse, ironshore rock and rougher seas. Across the water to the east, Cayman Brac and Little Cayman are reached by small plane: cliffs, diving and quiet.

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June to November: check forecasts before booking, stay flexible on dates and consider travel insurance. The territory has its own entry rules and a high cost of living: check the conditions on official sites for your nationality.

Rental car, taxis, buses and small planes

On Grand Cayman, traffic drives on the left. Rental cars are common, and taxis and public buses connect George Town, Seven Mile Beach and the other districts. There is no railway, and the road network is easy to grasp.

Cayman Brac and Little Cayman lie east of Grand Cayman, and a small plane is the way to reach them: the territory's airline links the islands. Many visitors book excursions (rays, diving) locally or through their hotel.

A maritime heritage with British and Caribbean influences

The islands take their name from a word for the caiman. Columbus sighted them in 1503 and called them Las Tortugas for the turtles. Pirates, shipwrecked sailors and fishermen settled later, and today's population comes from many countries, which shows in the food and the accents.

At the table you will find fresh fish, conch, lobster in season and dishes with Caribbean and British touches. In November, Pirates Week livens up the islands for eleven days.
