Why visit Jamaica
A small island with a global voice
The home of reggae
Jamaica gave the world reggae, ska, dub and dancehall, along with the Rastafari movement. Bob Marley was born at Nine Mile, where he is buried, and music is part of daily life from Kingston to Negril.
Beaches, cliffs and waterfalls
More than 50 beaches ring the island, including Negril's Seven Mile Beach, where the sunset and cliff diving at Rick's Cafe are a ritual. At Ocho Rios, Dunn's River Falls is a cascade you can climb.
The Blue Mountains
Blue Mountain Peak, at 2,256 m, is the island's highest point, and the surrounding mountains produce Blue Mountain coffee, a world-renowned brand. The national park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for mixed criteria.
A nation of sprinters
For a small island, Jamaica punches far above its weight in athletics, especially sprinting, and in cricket; Sabina Park in Kingston is one of the best-known grounds.
Regions and highlights
From Montego Bay to Negril, from Ocho Rios to the Blue Mountains
Montego Bay, the Second City
Known as MoBay, Montego Bay is the capital of St. James parish and one of the best-known tourism cities in the Caribbean, with duty-free shopping, a cruise terminal, beaches and resorts. Its airport lies under 5 km east of the city. Rose Hall Great House and Falmouth bring colonial history nearby.

Negril, Black River and the west
On the western tip, Negril has Seven Mile Beach, sunsets and cliff diving at Rick's Cafe. Farther south, the Black River and Treasure Beach stretch is quieter.

Ocho Rios, Port Antonio and the north coast
Ocho Rios is famous for Dunn's River Falls, a 180 m cascade you can climb, and for zip-lining at Mystic Mountain. Port Antonio, farther east, is greener and wetter.

Kingston and the Blue Mountains
Kingston has Devon House, the Bob Marley Museum and Trench Town, best visited by day with a local guide. In the north-east, the Blue Mountains and their coffee estates offer hiking toward Blue Mountain Peak.

Food and culture
Ackee, jerk and patties
The national dish is ackee and saltfish: ackee is a fruit that looks like scrambled eggs when cooked, and it must only be eaten ripe. Jerk chicken or pork, marinated in a spice blend and grilled, is the most famous specialty. Also try patties, flaky pastry filled with seasoned beef or vegetables, rice and peas cooked in coconut milk, curried goat and bammy, a cassava flatbread invented by the Taino people.
Local rum, Red Stripe beer and Blue Mountain coffee round out the table. English is the official language, with Jamaican Patois heard everywhere in the street and in song. The national motto, Out of Many, One People, reflects the island's varied origins.
Getting around
Two airports, minibuses and left-hand traffic
Sangster International in Montego Bay, the busiest airport in the Anglophone Caribbean, is the main gateway for the north and west coasts. Norman Manley in Kingston lies about 19 km from the centre of New Kingston on the Palisadoes sand spit and mainly serves the capital and the east.
Traffic drives on the left. Roads are congested in towns and narrow or poorly maintained in rural areas, so driving at night is discouraged. Minibuses and shared taxis cover the main roads; agree on taxi fares before you set off. To combine with another Greater Antilles island, Cuba and the Dominican Republic have their own pages.
Before you go
Sun all year, with a hurricane season to know about
| Area | Climate | Best time |
|---|---|---|
| Montego Bay and the north coast | Hot and humid, tempered by north-east trade winds; heavier rain from June to December | December to April |
| Negril and the west | Hot and sunny, clear sunsets; exposed to hurricanes | December to April |
| Kingston and the south coast | Drier rain-shadow zone; about 25 °C in January and 27 °C in July | December to April |
| Blue Mountains | About three degrees cooler, heavy rainfall at altitude | Dry season |
Hurricane season affects the island from late summer into autumn. In late October 2025 Hurricane Melissa, a Category 5 storm, struck Jamaica hard, particularly the west: check the status of accommodation and attractions before you book. Entry rules depend on your nationality; check official sources before travelling.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions about Jamaica
Which airport should I choose for Jamaica?
Montego Bay (MBJ) for the north-coast beaches, Negril and Ocho Rios; Kingston (KIN) for the capital, the Blue Mountains and the south coast. Compare both with a SniperAir alert.
When is the best time to travel to Jamaica?
The dry season, from December to April. From July to November hurricane risk is higher, but there are also fewer visitors and lower prices.
Is Jamaica expensive?
Guides rate the cost of living as comparable to the United States. US dollars are widely accepted in tourist areas, and taxi fares should be agreed before you ride. Compare options with our partners before booking.
Do I need a visa for Jamaica?
Most European, American and Commonwealth visitors do not need a visa for a stay of several weeks to six months, depending on nationality. Check current rules before you travel.
How long should I stay in Jamaica?
Plan 7 to 10 days to combine Montego Bay, Negril, Ocho Rios and the Blue Mountains. One week is enough for a single coast.
Is Jamaica safe for travellers?
