Why visit Sint Maarten
A small island, two moods and more than thirty beaches
One island, two countries
The island of Saint Martin has been shared since 1648: in the south, Sint Maarten, a country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands; in the north, the French side. You cross freely from one to the other, so you can mix atmospheres and cuisines.
More than thirty beaches
The tourism bureau counts 37 and says you are never more than fifteen minutes from the sea. Turquoise water, white sand, sheltered coves and lively beaches sit side by side.
Maho Beach and its jets
Princess Juliana airport is famous: landing aircraft pass a few dozen metres above Maho Beach, a spectacle found nowhere else in the world.
Shopping, dining and day trips
Philipsburg is known for its shops and waterfront; Marigot and Grand Case charm with their restaurants and moods. Anguilla, Saba and Saint-Barthélemy can be visited from the island.
Landmarks
Philipsburg, Maho Beach, Orient Bay, Grand Case and neighbouring islands
In four or five days you can see the classics: the capital and its bay, Maho Beach, then a trip to the French side for Orient Bay, Grand Case and Marigot. The island is easy to cover by car or taxi.
Philipsburg and Great Bay
Sint Maarten's capital stretches along four parallel streets between Great Bay Beach and the Great Salt Pond. You stroll the waterfront among colourful houses, shops, terraces and the cruise port. Great Bay Beach is an easy urban beach lined with palm trees.
Maho Beach and Simpson Bay
Maho Beach is a white-sand beach at the end of the airport runway, where you watch aircraft arrive just above the turquoise water. Stay careful: jet blast on take-off is dangerous. Close by, Simpson Bay and its lagoon welcome boaters, restaurants and water sports.

Orient Bay, on the French side
Crossing north, you reach Orient Bay, a long white-sand beach facing turquoise water. It is one of the liveliest beaches on the island, with water sports, beach huts and a relaxed mood.

Grand Case and Marigot
Grand Case is a seaside village known for its restaurants and sunsets over the bay; Marigot, the capital of the French side, charms with its market and waterfront. Both are minutes from Philipsburg, with no formalities at the border.

Anguilla, Saint-Barthélemy and Saba
From the island, boats or flights reach Anguilla, Saint-Barthélemy and Saba, each with its own character. It is a way to vary your stay without much logistics; check the entry rules for each destination.
Before you go
Best time: December to April, dry and mild
| Area | Climate | Best time |
|---|---|---|
| Philipsburg and the south coast | Hot and sunny, cooled by trade winds. | December to April; pleasant in summer too |
| Maho Beach and Simpson Bay | Same climate; windier at the water's edge. | December to April, morning or late afternoon |
| North coast and Orient Bay | Clear water, swell sometimes stronger in the north. | December to April |
| Whole island in the wet season | Brief showers, greener scenery, hotter days. | Mid-July to December, with flexible dates |
From December to April temperatures stay moderate and humidity is lower; summer is hotter. The rainy season runs roughly from mid-July to December and overlaps hurricane season, June to November: the island has been hit by powerful hurricanes, so follow forecasts and stay flexible. Following flights several weeks ahead helps you pay less.
Getting around
Rental car, buses, taxis and boats
A rental car is the freest way to move between the two sides of the island, with no visible border check. Local buses and minibuses serve the main roads, and taxis follow posted rates: ask the price before getting in.
Boat trips and crossings to Anguilla, Saint-Barthélemy or Saba should be booked ahead in high season. The authorities offer a digital entry form before arrival, best completed before check-in.
Food and culture
World cuisines, casinos and nightlife
More than a hundred and twenty nationalities live on the island, and you can taste it: Creole and Caribbean cooking, French tables and international flavours, from beach snack to fine dining. In Grand Case, waterfront meals are a staple of any stay.
For evenings, Philipsburg and Simpson Bay offer beach bars, casinos and live music. English is the everyday language; Dutch, French and Spanish are heard too, with Papiamento or the local Creole in places.
