Chengdu, the megacity that takes its time

Chengdu is the capital of Sichuan province in south-west China and one of its biggest cities, with just under 21 million people in the municipality at the 2020 census. Yet it has a reputation for being easy-going: it counted more than 30,000 teahouses in 2023, and on sunny days locals play mahjong on the sidewalk. A Los Angeles Times article once called it China's party city.

Two thousand years under one name

Founded by the Kingdom of Shu in the 4th century BC, Chengdu is described as the only major Chinese city to have kept both its site and its name through the imperial, republican and communist eras.

The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding

Go early, go in cool weather

The Panda Base was founded in 1987 with six pandas rescued from the wild and is a non-profit institute for giant pandas, red pandas and other rare animals. It lies in the north of the city, about 10 kilometers from the center. The first hours after it opens at around 7:30 are the best: feeding is usually between 8 and 10, and in hot summer weather the pandas often retreat indoors. Weekends are crowded.

Three Kingdoms heritage and historic lanes

Chengdu was the capital of Liu Bei's Shu Han state during the Three Kingdoms period, and the poets Li Bai and Du Fu both spent part of their lives here. Much of the old city has been replaced by modern development, but a few historic streets survive in restored form.

Wuhou Shrine

Built in the Western Jin period for the strategist Zhuge Liang, it is perhaps the most influential museum of Three Kingdoms relics in China and also holds the Hall of Liu Bei.

Jinli and the Wide and Narrow Alleys

Jinli sits right beside the Wuhou Shrine, and Kuanzhai Xiangzi lies to the north-east of the center. Both are restored, busy and commercial, but give a good feel for old street life.

Du Fu Thatched Cottage

The poet Du Fu found refuge in Chengdu during the Lushan-Shi Siming Rebellion and wrote more than 240 poems here in about four years. Today a memorial park of buildings and relics marks the spot.

A cup of tea and a changing face

Teahouses are everywhere, from ornate bamboo-furnished halls to simple modern ones, serving jasmine, longjing or biluochun tea. Locals come to play mahjong, get a massage or even have their ears cleaned, and People's Park's Heming Teahouse is among the best-known.

Larger teahouses sometimes stage Sichuan opera, famous for its masks that actors change in a split second.

Mala, mapo tofu and hot pot

In 2011 UNESCO named Chengdu a City of Gastronomy. Sichuan cooking is built on chilies and Sichuan peppercorns, which give the tingling-and-spicy sensation known as mala. Classics include mapo tofu, dan dan noodles and hot pot, the shared meal of friends in the evening.

Rapeseed oil or beef tallow

Many restaurants serve the richer, very spicy beef-tallow broth that is associated with Chongqing. If you want the lighter, more aromatic local style, ask for a rapeseed-oil base.

Chengdu Shuangliu

The older airport, about 16 km south-west of downtown and served by Metro Line 10.
