Guilin, a landscape before anything else

Guilin is a prefecture-level city in north-eastern Guangxi, on the west bank of the Li River and right next to Hunan. Its pull is the scenery: limestone peaks, caves and an emerald river. The Li even appears on the fifth-series 20-yuan banknote, with the view taken just outside Xingping Town.

A city shaped by its river

A first settlement is recorded on the Li in 314 BC, and in 214 BC the Lingqu Canal was dug to link it with the Xiang River. In 1981 China's State Council named Guilin one of four cities where heritage and scenery protection is a priority.

The Li River cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo

83 km of karst, with millions of visitors a year

The river runs 164 km in total, dropping from 141 m at Guilin to 103 m at Yangshuo. The cruise between the two towns covers about 83 km and draws millions of visitors every year. The scenery comes from about 2,600 m of Devonian and Carboniferous limestone, and cormorant fishing is often associated with the river.

Rice noodles

Guilin rice noodles have been a breakfast staple, said to go back to the Qin dynasty. The traditional local version includes horse meat, which you can ask to leave out. Zongzi, glutinous rice dumplings, are also popular.
