A river city
Visiting Wuhan, the city where the Han meets the Yangtze
Wuhan is the capital of Hubei province in central China, built on the eastern Jianghan Plain at the point where the Han River flows into the Yangtze. Water is its defining trait: around a quarter of the urban territory is water, the highest share among major Chinese cities, and the city has nearly 200 lakes.
A hub and a student city
Wuhan is a major rail, road and river crossroads, sometimes nicknamed the Chicago of China, and a big university town, with Wuhan University and Huazhong University of Science and Technology among the best known. It is also remembered as the place where the Wuchang Uprising began on 10 October 1911, the first step in the fall of the Qing dynasty.
Three cities in one
Wuchang, Hankou and Hanyang, split by two rivers
| Landmark | What to know |
|---|---|
| Wuchang, Hankou, Hanyang | The three historic districts, separated by the Yangtze and the Han and merged into one city on 1 January 1927. |
| The Yangtze | The great river runs through the city; the Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge, opened in 1957, was the first rail link across it here. |
| The Han River | It meets the Yangtze in the heart of Wuhan, the junction that shaped the city. |
| Lakes | East Lake and Tangxun Lake are among the largest lakes wholly inside a Chinese city. |
Landmark
The Yellow Crane Tower, made famous by poets
The Yellow Crane Tower on Snake Hill in Wuchang is the symbol of Wuhan. A tower is traditionally said to have first stood here in AD 223, though the written source for that date is some 600 years younger. It was destroyed and rebuilt many times; the last tower on the original site fell in 1884, and the present one was rebuilt about 1 km away between 1981 and 1985, at around 51 m high.
Poems and a river view
An eighth-century poem by Cui Hao made the tower famous, and Li Bai also wrote about it. From the top you look out over the Yangtze and the city, and travel guides suggest allowing two to three hours, with a light show in the evening.
