A small airport very close to the centre

BBI

Biju Patnaik International

The airport is about 5 to 6 km from the centre and about 4 km from the main railway station, a 10 to 20 minute ride by taxi, rickshaw or car outside rush hour. Prepaid taxi counters are at the exit. It is linked to major Indian cities, notably Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Mumbai.

BBS

Bhubaneswar railway station (train)

Many travellers also arrive by train: Bhubaneswar is on the main Kolkata-Chennai line and has two long-distance stations, Bhubaneswar and Bhubaneswar New.

Distances and times are indicative (Wikipedia EN, Wikivoyage EN) and vary with traffic. Sources give about 4 km from the station and 6 km from the centre.

Kalinga style and the old town

Bhubaneswar, the capital of Odisha, is nicknamed the "Temple City". The old town holds dozens of ancient temples, and some sources count several hundred, built from about the 7th to the 13th century in the so-called Kalinga style. The modern city was designed in the late 1940s by the German architect Otto Königsberger. Together with Puri and Konark, Bhubaneswar forms Odisha's "Golden Triangle".

The Mukteshvara Temple

The Mukteshvara, dated to about 970, is one of the most refined in the city, with its entrance arch and fine carving. Its pierced stone window (jali) is famous; the temple stands near a small pond.

Shikhara towers

Kalinga temples are recognised by their tall curved tower (shikhara), topped by a ribbed disc, and a lower entrance hall. Many are surrounded by gardens and small shrines.

Small shrines in a garden

In the old town, shrines of various sizes crowd around the great temples. A low hall with stepped roofs stands beside the main tower; walk from one temple to the next along the lanes.

Lingaraja and Rajarani

The Lingaraja, from the late 10th or the 11th century, is the largest temple in the city. Entry is reserved for Hindus, but it can be seen from a distance. The Rajarani temple, built of red-gold sandstone, has no main deity and is visited for its carvings. Respect dress codes and remove your shoes at the entrance of any place of worship.

Udayagiri, Khandagiri and Dhauli

The Udayagiri and Khandagiri caves

These twin hills, a few kilometres from the city, hold caves cut into the rock for Jain monks. In the Elephant Cave (Hathigumpha), an inscription tells of the reign of King Kharavela. The two-storey Rani Gumpha is the most spectacular.

Dhauli and the Shanti Stupa

About 25 km away, on Dhauli hill, an edict of Emperor Ashoka is carved into the rock, and the white Shanti Stupa, the "Peace Pagoda", was built through Indo-Japanese cooperation. The site overlooks the plain and recalls the Kalinga war.

Two unmissable sites outside the city

The Konark Sun Temple

About 65 km from Bhubaneswar, Konark is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Sun Temple, designed as a giant chariot, is famous for its sandstone carvings, including the great stone wheels; only part of the building survives. Allow half a day including the journey.

The chariot wheels

The stone wheels of the Sun Temple, finely decorated with patterns, have become a symbol of Odisha. Warm late-day light brings out the ochre sandstone.

Puri, the beach and the Jagannath Temple

Puri is about 60 to 70 km from Bhubaneswar, on the Bay of Bengal. People come for its long beach, where richly decorated camels wait for visitors, and for the Jagannath Temple, which is open only to Hindus. The Rath Yatra, or Chariot Festival, is the year's great celebration there; dates vary, so check before booking.

Going further

Chilika Lake, about 100 km away, attracts birdwatchers; Bhitarkanika park, about 120 km away, is known for its saltwater crocodiles.

Odisha, tribal art and dance

The Odisha State Museum

The original museum dates back to 1932; it presents archaeological objects, weapons, local arts and crafts and the natural and indigenous history of the region.

The Tribal Research Institute Museum

It shows authentic tribal dwellings built by craftsmen from the communities concerned.

Nandankanan Zoological Park

On the northern outskirts, it was India's first zoo to join the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums, and offers safaris.

Dance and music festivals

Bhubaneswar hosts festivals of Odissi dance and classical music, such as the Mukteswara Dance Festival. Check dates and opening hours for each venue before you go.

Dalma, pakhala and Odisha sweets

Odia cuisine

Odisha cooking is largely home-style and milder than in the south. Dalma, a dish of lentils with vegetables, is one of its specialities, as is pakhala, fermented rice served cool in summer. Fish and prawns from the coast are also worth trying.

Sweets

Rasabali, patties of fresh cheese in thickened sweet milk, is among Odisha's best-known sweets, alongside many others.

Habits

Restaurants often state whether they are vegetarian or not. The city goes to bed early: bars are few and nightlife is quiet.

Rickshaws, buses and taxis

In town

The streets are well laid out by Indian standards, and journeys are inexpensive. Auto-rickshaws are everywhere, but they have no meter: agree the price before getting in. City buses ("Mo Bus") also serve Cuttack and Puri.

Excursions

For Konark, Puri or Chilika Lake, a day taxi is simplest; ride-hailing apps are also used. The old town's temples are mainly visited on foot, combining walking and rickshaw rides.

Train

Bhubaneswar is a rail hub on the Kolkata-Chennai line, useful for reaching Puri or other cities.

An affordable budget compared with Europe

Bhubaneswar is one of India's very affordable cities: local meals, city transport and simple accommodation cost much less than in Europe. We give no figures because they vary with the season and the exchange rate: check the official sites.

The plane ticket remains the most variable item of a trip. SniperAir tracks flights to BBI closely and compares them with the route's price history.

When to visit Bhubaneswar?

Spring

March to May: hot, with highs that can reach about 44 °C; avoid sightseeing in full sun.

Summer

June to September: Bay of Bengal monsoon, bringing most of the roughly 1,650 mm of annual rain, especially in August.

Autumn

October and November: the monsoon ends, with a risk of cyclones on the coast; the humid heat then eases.

Winter

December to February: the most pleasant season, with lows that can fall towards 11 °C.

The best period runs from October to March, although the start of the season can still be humid. Odisha is exposed to cyclones: follow local authority advice if you travel at the end of the monsoon.
