Gateway to the north-east
Guwahati, the gateway to North East India
Guwahati is the largest city in Assam and in all of north-east India, spread along the south bank of the Brahmaputra between the river and the foothills of the Shillong plateau. It is known as the gateway to a region that borders Bhutan, Bangladesh, Myanmar and China, and the seat of Assam's government, Dispur, sits inside the city.
Three reasons to come, none of them found on the classic India circuit: some of the country's most intense temples, a city shaped by the river, and Kaziranga's one-horned rhinoceroses within a day's drive.
City of Temples
Kamakhya, the hilltop temple of Nilachal
Guwahati is nicknamed the City of Temples, with sanctuaries such as Ugratara, Basistha, Umananda and Navagraha scattered across its hills. The most sacred is Kamakhya, on Nilachal hill, one of the oldest and most revered centres of Shakta worship and one of the 51 Shakti Peethas.
A shrine with no statue
At its heart there is no human figure: worship is directed at a natural rock cleft kept moist by a spring. The complex also has separate shrines to the ten Mahavidyas, a rare group. The present temple was rebuilt under the Koch king Nara Narayan, with the work completed in 1565. The annual Ambubachi Mela draws pilgrims from across India, and the hill offers views over the city.

The Brahmaputra
Sunset cruises and Umananda Island
A river instead of a sea
Guwahati has no coastline, but it has one of Asia's great rivers. A sunset cruise on the Brahmaputra is the city's signature experience, and country boats run from the ghat to Umananda Island, also called Peacock Island. It is described as the smallest inhabited river island in the world and holds a Shiva temple built in 1694 under the Ahom king Gadadhar Singha.

Tea, silk and Assamese food
Masor tenga, pitha and a cup of Assam tea
Assam is one of the world's great tea regions, and the Guwahati Tea Auction Centre is described as the largest CTC tea auction in the world. On the plate, try masor tenga, a sour fish curry, and pitha, traditional rice cakes.
| Place | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Fancy Bazaar | Silk, handicrafts and local delicacies in the old city |
| Pan Bazaar | Silk, handicrafts and local delicacies |
| Sualkuchi | Silk-weaving village north-west of the city |
Day trip to Kaziranga
Kaziranga and its one-horned rhinoceros
Roughly 190 kilometers from Guwahati, Kaziranga National Park has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985. It is the place in India to see the Indian one-horned rhinoceros, alongside elephants, wild water buffalo and tigers, on jeep or elephant safaris. Count on 4 to 5 hours each way by road, so most visitors stay a night or two near the park, and the best season runs from November to April.
The park began as a reserve forest on 1 June 1905, after Mary Curzon failed to see a rhino on a visit and pressed for its protection.

Climate
Guwahati's climate, season by season
Winter (December to February)
Daytime highs of roughly 24 to 27 °C, nights of 11 to 13 °C and almost no rain. The best period for the temples, the river and Kaziranga.
Spring (March to May)
Highs of 30 to 32 °C, and the rain returns: from about 50 mm in March to over 250 mm in May.
Monsoon (June to September)
About 33 °C by day and 25 °C at night, with 180 to over 300 mm of rain a month. Humidity often reaches 80 to 90 percent.

October is still hot (about 31 °C) and wet; November is dry (under 10 mm) and milder, around 28 °C by day.
These figures come from the 1991-2020 normals for the airport station (Wikipedia EN); annual rainfall is quoted between about 1,700 and 2,000 mm depending on the source. From November to February you avoid both the heat and the rains. Kaziranga can be partly flooded during the monsoon (Wikipedia EN).

The river as transport

Two days cover Kamakhya, the river, the markets and one museum. Add one or two nights near the park for Kaziranga, which is too far for a comfortable same-day round trip.
