Port Blair, officially Sri Vijaya Puram, is the capital of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, on South Andaman between the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea. It is the only air gateway to the archipelago, so every Andaman Islands holiday begins here, about 1,190 km from Chennai. The islands are closer to Myanmar than to mainland India, and about 700 km from Phuket.
The archipelago counts 836 islands, only 31 of them inhabited, and some 200 coral species. It is also home to Barren Island, India's only active volcano.

Cellular Jail
A memorial to India's freedom struggle
Built between 1896 and 1906 on a panopticon design, the Cellular Jail had seven wings and 696 small cells. Hundreds of freedom fighters were held here, most of them from Bengal, among them Vinayak Damodar Savarkar. It is now a National Memorial, and three of its wings are open to visitors. It is closed on Mondays and over the lunch break.
In the evening, a light-and-sound show of about 45 minutes tells its story, in Hindi and, on some days, in English. Check the current schedule on the official portal.

41 km northeast of Port Blair, Havelock Island, now called Swaraj Dweep, is the archipelago's beach destination. Radhanagar Beach, also known as Beach No. 7, was named Best Beach in Asia by Time magazine and has Blue Flag certification. Elephant Beach is the spot for snorkelling, and PADI and SSI dive schools operate on the island. Jolly Buoy Island is another snorkelling favorite.

Foreigners need a valid Indian visa, and the rules on the islands' entry permit have changed several times, so check the current requirements with official sources before you go. The Nicobar Islands and tribal reserves are closed to visitors, and photographing or contacting the Jarawa is prohibited. Indian visitors travel with photo ID.
The islands keep mainland Indian time, so the sun sets very early in winter, around 4 pm.
