Hazelnut coast
An Ordu travel guide starts in the hazelnut groves
Any Ordu travel guide has to begin with hazelnuts. The province supplies about a quarter of the world's hazelnuts (Wikipedia EN, TR), and the whole eastern Black Sea region is nicknamed the hazelnut coast. This authentic, little-visited Black Sea city suits nature and food lovers looking to escape mass tourism: a modern gondola climbs a hill above the sea, grilled fish and pide are the staples, and green highland pastures, the yaylas, lie about an hour away. English is rarely spoken, but locals are described as friendly.
From Kotyora to Ordu
Greek colonists from Miletus founded the city as Kotyora, and Xenophon's Ten Thousand halted here. The Ottomans took it in 1461 and renamed it Ordu, meaning army, in 1869. A fire struck in 1883, and the Greek population left in 1924 in the population exchange. The city has about 235,000 inhabitants (Wikipedia EN, 2023).

Food
Hamsi, kuymak and Ordu Sadesi ice cream
Hamsi, the Black Sea anchovy, is served grilled with grilled pickles and corn bread, mostly in winter. Pide comes with meat, cheese or egg, and kuymak combines melted cheese and corn. For dessert, the Ordu Sadesi ice cream from Denizciler is aged for about 13 days, and hazelnuts turn up in all kinds of products.
Local products
Products awaiting geographical indication status include the Ordu Çakıldak hazelnut, Ordu chestnut honey, Perşembe walnut halva and Ünye pide (Wikipedia TR).
Where to eat
Restaurants and cafes line the main road between the Grand Mosque and the harbour; Wikivoyage EN finds no stand-out places, and many cafes serve alcohol. Small pide and fish places along the coast are often more authentic.

Budget
An affordable to mid-range stay off the tourist circuit
