Aarhus Airport
The gateway to eastern Jutland
Aarhus Airport (Tirstrup)
Serves Denmark's second city and eastern Jutland, about 35 km northeast of the city centre.
Worth seeing
From Aros to a university city
The Viking settlement stood near the mouth of the Aarhus river — the old name Aros refers to that geography. Trade, the bishopric and the harbour sustained the medieval town, and railways and industry drove nineteenth-century growth. Aarhus University, founded in 1928, added a durable academic identity and one of Denmark's most coherent modernist campuses. The working harbour has not disappeared, but Dokk1 and the new district of Aarhus Ø now occupy former or reconfigured port land.

Three major museums, three possible days
ARoS spans Danish and international art from the eighteenth century onwards, topped by Olafur Eliasson's famous rainbow-panorama walkway (200 DKK adult, checked 31 August 2026). Den Gamle By, an open-air museum named European Museum of the Year 2026, interprets several periods of Danish urban life (145 to 205 DKK by season). South of the centre, Moesgaard combines archaeology, anthropology and a grass-roofed building that becomes part of the landscape (195 DKK at the door, 185 DKK online) — three major museums in one day is poor value even when the map makes it look possible.
Worth seeing
The Latin Quarter and St Clement's Cathedral
St Clement's Cathedral anchors Store Torv, with its medieval scale, wall paintings and long nave. Nearby, a small underground Viking museum explains the earlier ramparts and settlement found on the site. Graven, Mejlgade and Klostergade form the loose Latin Quarter, with older houses, independent shops and cafés — a working neighbourhood, not an open-air museum. The reopened riverfront becomes lively in the evening.
Food
Rye bread, herring and modern Danish cooking
Try rye bread, herring, fried plaice, pork with parsley sauce and Danish baking in context rather than as a checklist. Aarhus Street Food is practical for mixed groups, though its international stalls shouldn't be mistaken for a survey of local cuisine. For higher-end dining, compare current menus at Domestic, Frederikshøj and Gastromé — Michelin status alone won't tell you today's price, duration or dietary options.
