Airport and getting into town
An airport about 15 km away, linked to the centre by bus
Oulu (OUL)
Oulu Airport is in Oulunsalo, south-west of the city, about 15 km from the centre. Bus lines 8 and 9 link it with the centre in about thirty minutes, usually with two departures an hour in the daytime according to Wikivoyage; a taxi takes around twenty minutes. The airport has several daily flights from Helsinki. From Helsinki the train takes roughly 6 to 8 hours, and the station is next to the centre; long-distance coaches take even longer.
Distance given by Wikipedia (EN) and Wikivoyage (EN); bus and flight schedules change, so check before you travel. Times are approximate and we do not list fares.
Oulu is the largest city in northern Finland and one of the most populous in the country, on the Gulf of Bothnia at the mouth of the Oulu River. It is known as the technology capital of the North, with a university, digital companies and a large research centre. The city was designated European Capital of Culture for 2026.
It is also known for its network of cycle paths, very extensive and cleared of snow in winter, which sometimes earns it the title of the cycling capital of the North. The seasons are marked: very cold, dark winters and short, bright summers with light nights.
The river, the islands and the parks
A frozen river in winter, green islands in summer
Oulu spreads around the estuary of the Oulu River, among several islands. The banks are lined with parks, cycle paths and cafés.
The castle and the observatory
In Hupisaaret park are the remains of the old Oulu Castle, destroyed in 1793 when lightning blew up the gunpowder store, according to Wikivoyage. A maritime observatory was built on the ruins, with a tower offering a view; there is a café, open in season. Check opening hours.
The river in winter
In winter the river freezes and snow covers the banks; the sunset, low on the horizon, paints the sky pink and orange. In the photo, two bicycles parked in the snow are a reminder that people cycle all year round in Oulu.

Hupisaaret, a park on an island
Hupisaaret is a large wooded park on islands in the estuary, with paths, playgrounds, a café and a cycle track. The remains of the castle and the observatory are also here. It is one of the most popular green spaces for residents, in summer and winter alike.

Auroras and nature
Possible auroras, bright summer nights and a frozen sea
Oulu lies further south than Lapland, but the northern lights remain possible, especially from autumn to late winter, on clear nights and away from city lights. They depend on the weather and solar activity: nothing is guaranteed.
Summer light and winter night
In summer the nights stay light: the sun sets very little, which stretches the evenings by the water. In winter daylight is very brief, and snow and ice reflect the weak light.
Nallikari beach
Nallikari is a leisure area with a sandy beach. In summer people swim there; in winter the sea is frozen, covered with snow and ice, and you can walk on routes marked as safe.
An aurora over a frozen lake
This photo shows a green and purple aurora above a frozen lake and pines, near Oulu. To try to see an aurora, get away from lights, dress very warmly and be patient.

An observation tower in snow and ice
This photo shows an observation tower on an expanse of snow and ice in the bluish light of winter; we do not tie it to a specific place. It gives an idea of the landscapes of the Gulf of Bothnia coast in winter.

The centre, the cathedral and the museums
A neoclassical cathedral, the market square, art and science museums
The places in this section are not illustrated: they are described in text only. We do not give prices, which change.
The cathedral and the centre
Oulu Cathedral, in neoclassical style, was rebuilt in 1832 after the previous one burned down; it is the work of the architect Carl Ludvig Engel, who also designed the buildings of Senate Square in Helsinki. The market square (Kauppatori) mixes several styles; the statue of the market policeman, Toripolliisi, is one of the city's symbols. Check the cathedral's opening hours.
Oulu Museum of Art
The Oulu Museum of Art (OMA) shows modern and contemporary art, with several exhibitions a year.
Tietomaa
The Tietomaa science centre is one of the first in the country: interactive exhibitions in a former tannery; it has been under renovation, so check whether it is open.
Other places
The Northern Ostrobothnia Museum presents the history and culture of the region, and the Turkansaari open-air museum shows traditional buildings.
Food and drink
Fish from the bay, a market hall, cafés and sauna
The market hall
Oulu's market hall (Kauppahalli), in red brick, is a meeting place for local products and cafés. The neighbouring outdoor market offers fish, salmon and fried muikku (small whitefish) in season.
Fish, coffee and pastries
Oulu was once known for wood tar and salmon. Today fish, local pizzas and café culture are classics; try pies and buns in a café in the centre, often with a coffee.
Sauna
Sauna is part of daily life; the city has public saunas, some floating in summer. Follow the customs (shower first, respect the rules).
The market hall
The red-brick market hall, with its large green arched windows, is one of the most recognisable buildings in the centre. It is a good place to have lunch or taste local specialities; check opening hours, which vary.

Getting around
Bike, bus, taxis and on foot
By bike
Oulu has one of the most extensive networks of cycle and pedestrian paths in the country, often with underpasses beneath major roads. Even in winter a notable share of trips is made by bike, and the paths are cleared first. You can rent a bike; in winter, use suitable tyres and take care on ice.
Bus and taxis
The city bus network serves the districts, the airport and the university; payment is generally by contactless card or app. Taxis are available. The centre is compact enough to explore on foot.
From the rest of the country
The station is right next to the centre; the train links Oulu with Helsinki via Tampere in roughly 6 to 8 hours, and with Rovaniemi further north, about 200 km away. Long-distance buses also serve the city.
Budget and precautions
A medium budget
Price level
Oulu is a medium-budget destination compared with many European countries, often a little more affordable than the big cities of the south. Many sights are free (parks, the riverbanks, beaches) and lunch menus are reasonable. We give no figures because we could not confirm them from two independent sources.
Flights
The flight remains the most variable cost. SniperAir tracks fares to OUL and compares them with the route's history, but it does not sell or book tickets.
Entry rules and precautions
Finland is part of the Schengen Area: entry requirements depend on your nationality, so check them on official government sites. Also consult the official recommendations of your country of departure. In winter, cold and ice call for caution; walk on the ice of a river or the sea only on a route marked as safe, and follow local advice.
When to go
Very cold winters, short and bright summers
Winter (December to February)
Cold and snowy, with very little light; the river and the sea freeze. This is the season of snow activities, sauna and, on a clear night, possible auroras.
Spring (March to May)
Days lengthen fast and the sun returns; snow melts gradually, with variable weather.
Summer (June to August)
Short and mild, with light nights: bike rides, parks, terraces and Nallikari beach.
Autumn (September to November)
Forest colours, first frosts and the first possible auroras; days shorten quickly.
Oulu has a subarctic climate: winter is long, cold and snowy, summer short and mild. The best time depends on what you want: summer for cycling and parks, winter for snow, sauna and, with luck, the auroras.
By length of stay
