The caldera and Oia's legendary sunset

The crescent-shaped caldera, carved out by ancient volcanic collapse, is Santorini's defining feature, framed by the cliffside villages of Fira, Oia and Imerovigli, where buildings seem to grow directly out of the hillside along narrow, winding pathways. Fira, the capital, is the island's hub for shopping, nightlife and caldera views, while Oia — reached from Fira along the caldera rim — is famous the world over for its sunsets, drawing crowds every evening to the ruins of its old castle. The old Gialos port below Fira, once the island's main harbor, is now reached by nearly 500 steps or the modern cable car, and is mostly used today for excursion boats and cruise tenders.

The Akrotiri archaeological site preserves one of the best-preserved Bronze Age settlements in the Mediterranean, its ash-covered ruins now protected under a large modern roof. The Roman Theater and Odeon of Thera, built during Roman rule, add another historical layer to the island. Inland, Emporio stands out for its authentic, medieval-feeling streets and well-preserved houses, offering a quieter counterpoint to the crowds along the caldera rim — one of the districts where Santorini's older character is easiest to feel away from the postcard views.

Boat excursions into the caldera lead to hikes near active volcanic craters and swims in geothermal hot springs, with the surrounding volcanic rock formations also popular among divers thanks to their clear visibility. Santorini also works well as a base for island-hopping: regular ferries connect it to Piraeus and Rafina on the mainland, and to nearby Cyclades islands including Ios, Milos, Syros and Paros, as well as further afield to the Dodecanese (Rhodes, Kos) and Crete. High-speed ferries reach Piraeus in about 4 hours; conventional ferries take around 8.

Santorini's nutrient-rich volcanic soil produces distinctive ingredients — sun-dried cherry tomatoes, fava beans, capers and white eggplant — that show up across the island's tavernas. Its indigenous grape varieties, Assyrtiko, Athiri and Aidani, are largely immune to phylloxera thanks to that same volcanic soil, meaning many vines here are centuries old; the resulting wines carry distinctly mineral and citrus notes that have earned the island its nickname, the "Wine Island." Wine tasting and vineyard tours are one of the most popular activities across Santorini, and the Koutsoyannopoulos Winery even runs a cave-set wine museum walking visitors through the island's wine-making history. For beer drinkers, the Santorini Brewing Company is the island's one brewery.

Airport, ferries and getting around

Santorini's airport, located in the southern Aegean roughly 193 km (120 miles) southeast of the Greek mainland, has regular direct flights to Athens with international arrivals concentrated in the summer months. Beyond flying, ferries link the island to Piraeus, Rafina and other Aegean islands, making Santorini easy to combine with a wider Greek island itinerary. Beaches like Red Beach and the black-sand stretches around Perissa and Kamari — Perivolos is the longest black-sand beach on the island — are best reached with a rental car or scooter if you're staying away from the caldera-side villages.
