A mountain valley between two legendary national parks
Jackson Hole refers both to the small town of Jackson and to the whole valley that spreads at the foot of the Teton Range. The name comes from the trapper David E. Jackson, who hunted beaver here in the 1820s; "hole" was trappers' vocabulary for a high-altitude valley ringed by peaks. The town sits at about 1,900 m (1,901 m according to Wikipedia), which brings a mountain climate: cool summers and long, snowy winters. It is the gateway to Grand Teton National Park and, further north, to Yellowstone.

About 11 km (7 miles) north of the town of Jackson, inside Grand Teton National Park itself: allow about 15 minutes by car or shuttle to the center, and around 30 minutes to Teton Village (indicative). Car rental companies are on site; some hotels run shuttles. Service is wider in high season (summer and ski season) than in the shoulder months, often via hubs such as Denver or Salt Lake City.

Getting around
A free bus in town, a car for the parks
In Jackson itself the center is walkable around Town Square. The START bus network serves the town, Teton Village and several neighboring communities; the ride is free within the town limits and as far as the National Museum of Wildlife Art (per Wikivoyage, check). For the parks, a car is the most practical option, rented at the airport or in town.
Driving and seasons
In winter, plan for suitable tires and check road conditions: some park roads are closed to ordinary cars, and snow can arrive early or late in the year. At dawn and dusk wildlife crosses the roads: drive slowly.

Town Square and its elk antler arches
In the heart of town, Town Square is framed by four arches built entirely from elk antlers. The antlers fall naturally each spring on the National Elk Refuge next door, where around 7,500 elk winter on average; local scouts collect them and sell part of the haul at auction on the square in spring (details to check). Around the square are shops, galleries and restaurants in pioneer-era buildings; the town was named in 1894 and incorporated in 1914.

Wildlife art at the National Museum of Wildlife Art
About 4 km north of Jackson, the National Museum of Wildlife Art overlooks the elk refuge from a bluff: a stone building of around 4,700 m², 14 galleries, a sculpture trail and a collection centered on animal realism. The national park visitor centers complete the picture with exhibits on the valley's geology, wildlife and history (check hours by season).
National parks
Grand Teton and Yellowstone: two parks, one valley
Grand Teton National Park, created in 1929, protects the main peaks of the Teton Range, including the Grand Teton at 4,199 m, as well as Jackson Lake and the Snake River. Its entrance is a few tens of minutes from town; an entrance fee applies (see the park's official website for the amount). Yellowstone is a longer excursion, about 90 to 100 km from Jackson: allow a full day, and check road openings in winter, when access is heavily restricted (check).
Wildlife
Elk, bison and bears: watching without disturbing
Every winter the National Elk Refuge hosts an average of around 7,500 elk down from the mountains, and the neighboring park is also home to bison, moose, bears and wolves. The park's rules are clear: stay at least 100 yards (about 90 m) from bears and wolves and at least 25 yards (about 23 m) from any other animal; never come between an adult and its young. Binoculars and a telephoto lens are good allies.
Skiing
Jackson Hole Mountain Resort and skiing from December to March
Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, opened in 1966 at Teton Village about twenty kilometers from town, is known for its steep slopes: a continuous vertical drop of 1,262 m, with about half the terrain rated expert. The "Big Red" aerial tram climbs to 3,185 m at the summit of Rendezvous Mountain, with panoramic views. The ski season runs roughly from December to March. For gentler slopes, Snow King is right by town and Grand Targhee lies over Teton Pass.

Game meat, Western cooking and wild huckleberries
Jackson's cooking is American West: beef, bison and elk grilled or braised, chili, hearty dishes after a day's hike. The huckleberry, a wild high-altitude berry close to the blueberry, turns up in jams, desserts and cocktails. Restaurants are concentrated around Town Square and Teton Village. In the shoulder months several places close: check opening hours.
