Kansas City, Missouri sits on the state line with Kansas, which is why a namesake city exists on the other side of the border. It had 508,090 residents at the 2020 census, in a metro area of roughly two million. National WWI Museum and Memorial. Set at the foot of the Liberty Memorial, it is devoted to the First World War and was designated by Congress as the national museum in 2004. You can go up the memorial for a view of the city.
American Jazz Museum and Negro Leagues Baseball Museum. Two neighbors at 18th & Vine: one tells the story of jazz and its clubs, the other that of Black baseball before the major leagues were integrated.
Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art. Founded in 1994, it shows around 1,500 works of American art according to German Wikipedia, with free admission according to Wikivoyage.
Science City. An interactive science center inside Union Station, a good fit for families.
Landmarks and districts
Union Station, the Liberty Memorial and Country Club Plaza
Union Station opened in 1914 to replace the old Union Depot, and now holds the Amtrak station, restaurants, theaters and Science City. Covered walkways link it to Crown Center, and the Liberty Memorial lawn across the street gives the best view of the station and the skyline.
Country Club Plaza, opened in 1923, is described as one of the first planned open-air shopping districts in the country. Its architecture is modeled on Seville, including a replica of the Giralda tower that dates from 1967 according to Spanish Wikipedia, with many fountains and statues.
The Crossroads Arts District hosts free gallery nights on the first Friday of each month, and the River Market, north of downtown, runs a farmers' market on Saturdays.

From MCI airport to downtown
Kansas City International
The airport's single new terminal opened on February 28, 2023, with two concourses and 40 gates, plus shops and restaurants.
About 24 km (15 miles) northwest of downtown, according to Wikipedia.
A RideKC bus line links the airport with downtown roughly once an hour according to Wikivoyage; taxis, ride-hailing and rental cars are on site, and the drive takes about half an hour outside rush hour. Expect 10 to 11 hours of flying from Europe depending on connections, as direct flights are generally not available.

Free streetcar, buses and a car
The streetcar. The KC Streetcar has linked the River Market and Union Station since 2016, over about two miles. It is free, and has been extended south to the University of Missouri-Kansas City according to German Wikipedia.
Buses. The RideKC network includes the MAX bus rapid transit lines serving downtown, Crown Center, Westport and the Plaza; free bus fares were time-limited, so check current fares.
By car. A car is the most practical way to reach the stadiums, outlying museums and the zoo. Downtown, the streetcar and walking are usually enough.
