Airport and getting into town
A big airport to the southeast, parks to the southwest; the car dominates
Orlando International (MCO)
Orlando International Airport lies southeast of downtown; sources disagree on the distance, from about 10 km (6 miles) in Wikivoyage (DE, ES) to about 20 km (12.5 miles) in Wikivoyage (EN). It is the busiest airport in Florida, with more than 50 million passengers a year according to Wikipedia (FR), and the seventh-busiest in the United States according to Wikipedia (EN). Public transport from the airport is limited: most visitors rent a car or take a hotel shuttle according to Wikivoyage (DE). LYNX buses and taxis also run, and the Brightline train serves the airport and reaches Miami in about 3.5 hours according to Wikivoyage (EN). Security lines can exceed an hour in summer and around holidays.
Orlando Sanford (SFB)
Sanford lies about 30 km (19 miles) northeast of downtown and is mainly served by low-cost airlines according to Wikivoyage (DE, EN). It is a secondary airport worth watching if MCO is too expensive.
Distances and times are approximate, based on Wikivoyage (EN, FR, DE, ES) and Wikipedia; timetables change, so check them before you travel. We do not quote fares.
Orlando had 307,573 residents at the 2020 census (Wikipedia FR, EN, DE) and more than 2.6 million in its metro area. It is nicknamed "The City Beautiful" or "O-Town". The theme parks lie to the southwest: Walt Disney World is about 34 km (21 miles) from downtown, at Bay Lake and Lake Buena Vista according to Wikipedia (EN), so it is not inside the city itself. This page presents Orlando as a city destination, with its lake, museums and districts.
Landmarks
Lake Eola, the fountain, shaded parks and the downtown skyline
Orlando is more than its theme parks: its downtown is organised around a lake, a fountain and shaded parks. The places below are illustrated; Winter Park, International Drive and the theme parks are covered in text.
Lake Eola at sunset
Lake Eola is downtown's landmark: a park around a swan-filled lake with a lighted fountain according to Wikivoyage (ES). Entry to the park is free according to Wikivoyage (EN, ES). The lake's fountain is among Orlando's symbols according to Wikipedia (FR), and the downtown towers reflect in the water at dusk.

The shore and the cypress trees
The walk around the lake runs under cypress trees, with downtown as a backdrop. Orlando has 17 city parks according to Wikipedia (DE), including Lake Eola. Mornings are the quietest, before the afternoon heat.

The lit skyline
In the evening the towers light up and reflect in the lake. At some times of year the park's trees are wrapped in strings of lights. The neighbouring district has venues such as the Dr. Phillips Center, according to Wikipedia (EN) and the official tourism site.

The fountain and the birds
At sunset the fountain stands out against an orange sky while birds settle on the water. It is one of the most photogenic moments in the city, and the park stays calm away from the crowds of the theme parks.

Oaks and Spanish moss
Tall oaks draped in Spanish moss are typical of central Florida. Several neighbourhood parks offer benches under these trees, away from the toll roads and the noise of the big attractions.

Winter Park, International Drive and the theme parks
Winter Park is a neighbouring city north of downtown, known for Rollins College and its Morse Museum (Wikivoyage ES). International Drive is the tourist strip of hotels, SeaWorld and the convention centre. Walt Disney World, opened in October 1971 according to Wikipedia (EN), has four theme parks according to Wikivoyage (EN); Universal Orlando, opened in 1990 (EN), is the only theme park inside the city limits. Epic Universe opened in 2025 according to Wikipedia (FR, DE).
Museums and culture
Orlando Museum of Art, Mennello, Orlando Science Center and the Morse Museum
Art: Orlando Museum of Art and Mennello
The Orlando Museum of Art is downtown according to Wikipedia (EN), and the Mennello Museum of American Art is named by Wikivoyage (ES). In Winter Park, the Morse Museum and the Rollins Museum of Art complete the offer. We do not quote fares: conditions change.
Science: Orlando Science Center
The Orlando Science Center has the largest refracting telescope in Florida according to Wikivoyage (EN). It is a good option on hot or stormy days, when being outdoors is difficult.
History and performance
The Orange County Regional History Center traces the county's past, and the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts hosts concerts, theatre and shows downtown. We do not detail programmes: check the official sites.
Food and drink
A very international offer around the parks, with no single specialty
World cuisines
Our sources confirm no single regional specialty in Orlando. The offer grew up around the parks, hotels and shopping centres, with restaurants of every cuisine, from family chains to chef-led tables.
Tables and awards
The official tourism site highlights restaurants listed by the Michelin Guide and recognised by the James Beard Foundation. Downtown and Winter Park concentrate the most walkable addresses.
Practical tips
Meals inside the parks cost more than in the neighbouring districts. Book at peak hours and keep your schedule flexible when summer storms roll in.
Getting around
Rental car, LYNX buses, SunRail and the I-Ride Trolley
Rental car
Orlando is called the "rental car capital of the world" according to Wikivoyage (EN). Nearly every road other than I-4 is tolled, and traffic is heavy at rush hour and when the parks close. International Drive is hard to drive in busy periods, so buses, taxis or ride-hailing are recommended there.
LYNX, Lymmo and SunRail
The LYNX network includes buses, among them route 311 linking the airport, the convention centre, Florida Mall, SeaWorld and Disney World according to Wikivoyage (EN). Lymmo is a free downtown circuit. SunRail, a commuter train opened on 1 May 2014 according to Wikipedia (DE), does not run at weekends according to Wikivoyage (EN).
I-Ride Trolley and Brightline
The I-Ride Trolley runs along International Drive, but it is slow and does not serve Disney according to Wikivoyage (EN). Brightline links Orlando to Miami, and an Amtrak station lies about 2 km (1.2 miles) south of downtown according to Wikivoyage (DE).
