Alexandria, Greco-Roman and Mediterranean

Egypt's second-largest city was founded by Alexander the Great in April 331 BC and became the capital of the Ptolemaic Kingdom, at one time the most populous city in the ancient world. There are no pharaonic friezes or desert here: the heritage is Greco-Roman, the front is the sea, and the mood is more cosmopolitan and relaxed than Cairo.

Greeks and then other Europeans settled here from the 19th century, and in the early 20th century the city became a home for novelists and poets. Most of them left after the 1956 Suez Crisis, but the sea breeze remains: in summer Egyptians come to escape Cairo's heat.

The Library and the Lighthouse, two vanished legends

Bibliotheca Alexandrina

The modern library pays tribute to the legendary Great Library, which faced destruction during Caesar's siege in 47 BC. The new building has become one of the symbols of the city, and English-language tours are offered.

Qaitbay Citadel

Founded in 1477 by the Mamluk Sultan Qa'it Bay, the fort stands on the site of the Pharos lighthouse, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, which an earthquake destroyed in the 14th century. Much of the stone of the ruined lighthouse was reused for the fort.

Kom el-Shoqafa Catacombs and Pompey's Pillar

SiteWhat to know
Catacombs of Kom el-ShoqafaA multi-level necropolis with a large spiral staircase and sarcophagi, discovered by accident in 1900 and mixing Egyptian, Greek and Roman symbols
Pompey's PillarA Roman triumphal column on the ancient acropolis, with a granite shaft of roughly 27 metres
Kom el-DikkaThe only Roman amphitheatre in Egypt, with about 13 tiers
Graeco-Roman MuseumThe natural complement to a visit devoted to ancient Alexandria

Don't forget the Royal Jewelry Museum, which shows jewellery from the Egyptian monarchy between 1805 and 1952, and the Montaza Palace gardens along the shore, where the Salamlek was built in 1892 and the Haramlik in 1925.

The Corniche, seafood and old cafes

Promenade, fish and local life

The Corniche follows the Mediterranean and is lined with restaurants. Seafood is the star, and the local touch is koshary topped with Alexandrian fried liver. Try the stretchy Alexandrian ice cream near Qaitbay and an om ali at Trianon, a cafe open since 1905. Trams run along the seafront, and yellow tram line 25 links Raml Station to Fort Qait Bey.

Montazah and Maamoura, away from the centre

Beaches are not Alexandria's main draw. Maamoura and Montazah are the summer favourites, crowded with Egyptian families and with an entry fee, and visitors report plastic litter in the water in summer.
