Airport and getting into town
Egypt's second-busiest airport, about ten kilometres from the resort strip
Hurghada International (HRG)
Hurghada International Airport is described by Wikipedia (EN) as Egypt's second-busiest. Sources disagree on the distance: Wikivoyage (EN) says about 8 km west of the resort strip, while Wikivoyage (DE) puts it about 15 km south of the centre, so allow roughly ten kilometres and a short ride. Flights from northern Europe take 4 to 5 hours, according to Wikivoyage (DE). Taxis are unmetered, so agree the fare before you get in, as Wikivoyage (EN) advises. Uber and Careem operate, but pick-ups at the airport can be unreliable.
Distances are approximate and sources differ; check transfer options before you travel. We do not quote fares.
Hurghada is the capital of the Red Sea Governorate and a resort city strung along the coast between the sea and the Red Sea Mountains. Wikivoyage (EN) splits it into the old, more Egyptian district of Ad-Dahar in the north, the Sigala strip with most restaurants, hotels and dive operators, and the Sheraton Road and resort belt further south. Population figures vary widely between encyclopaedias, so we do not give one.
Landmarks and nature
Turquoise water, coral reefs and offshore islands beside a desert coast
Hurghada began as a small fishing settlement and was built up for tourism from the 1980s, according to Wikipedia (EN, DE, ES). There is no monumental old centre: people come for the water, the desert backdrop and the reefs. The places below are illustrated.
A desert coast facing the Red Sea
Dry mountains rise behind the hotels, and the sea in front is a deep blue. This view shows a white resort village on the shore with a small sandy islet just offshore. The sharp contrast between desert and water is what defines the coast here.

Jetties and day-boats
Most reefs lie offshore, so divers and snorkellers go out by boat from hotel jetties or the marina, as Wikivoyage (EN, DE) explains. The photo shows white boats moored beside a jetty at the edge of a reef drop-off, where the water shifts from deep blue to turquoise.

An open bay under the mountains
South of the centre the coast alternates between bays and sandy beaches lined with hotels. Much of the white sand belongs to hotels, though Wikivoyage (EN, DE) mentions a few pay-to-enter public beaches near the marina. The ridge of the Red Sea Mountains closes the horizon.

The Giftun islands and the reefs
Wikipedia (EN) lists dive sites around the Giftun islands, Abu Ramada and Shadwan, as well as the wrecks of the El Mina and the Rosalie Moller. El Mahmya, on Giftun, is described as a beachfront camp on a protected island, and Wikivoyage (DE) calls its beach the most famous. Wikipedia (EN, DE) also notes reef damage from heavy diving, so choosing a careful operator matters.

Beach and parasols
Hotel beaches are laid out with straw parasols and loungers on pale sand. Wikivoyage (DE) puts the swimming season at April to November, and notes that strong north-east winds can make winter feel cool despite the sun.

The marina and Sigala
Sigala is the liveliest district, with the marina, restaurants, bars and shopping, and it is where boat trips start, according to Wikipedia (DE) and Wikivoyage (EN, DE). Seen through an arch, the marina shows jetties, boats and clear water.

Choosing a district
Ad-Dahar suits simple budgets and a taste for bazaars; Sigala suits people who want restaurants and evenings out within reach; the southern resort belt, almost twenty kilometres long according to Wikivoyage (DE), suits those who want an all-in beach stay. Quieter resort areas such as El Gouna, about 20 km north, Sahl Hasheesh, Makadi Bay and Soma Bay are listed by Wikipedia (EN).
Museums and culture
An antiquities museum, a large aquarium and a big mosque
Hurghada Museum
Wikipedia (EN) calls it the first antiquities museum in the Red Sea Governorate, with about 2,000 artefacts; Wikipedia (DE) dates the museum to 2020. It is a good short visit before or after a Luxor excursion.
Aquarium and mosque
The Hurghada Grand Aquarium opened in 2015 and is described as the largest in Egypt by Wikipedia (EN). Al Mina Mosque, with two 40 m minarets, is the largest in the governorate (EN) and opened in 2012 (DE). We do not quote ticket prices because they change and sources disagree.
Monasteries and the desert
The monasteries of St Anthony and St Paul are mentioned by Wikivoyage (DE) and Wikipedia (DE); check opening times first because they can close during periods of fasting. Desert trips offer Bedouin villages, quad bikes and camel rides.
Food and drink
Seafood, Levantine kitchens and local drinks
An international table
Restaurants outside hotels cluster in Sigala and Ad-Dahar, says Wikivoyage (DE). Wikivoyage (EN) lists Syrian, Lebanese, Indian, Thai and seafood restaurants, plus fast-food chains. Along the southern resort belt there are few independent restaurants, so most visitors eat at their hotel.
Drinks
Karkadeh (hibiscus tea, served hot or cold), tea and sahlab are the local drinks named by Wikivoyage (EN); shisha is widespread. Alcohol is available in hotels and many restaurants but restricted during Ramadan (Wikivoyage DE).
Fish and food hygiene
At seafood restaurants you usually choose the fish and how it is cooked. Wikivoyage (EN) warns that stomach upsets are common because of heat and food hygiene, so pick busy places and drink bottled water.
Getting around
Minibuses, taxis you must haggle and long day trips
Minibuses and taxis
Fixed-fare minibuses run along the coast (Wikivoyage EN, DE); carry small notes. Taxis are unmetered, so agree the price first. Uber and Careem exist but are not always allowed at the airport or hotel gates.
Luxor and Cairo
Wikipedia (EN) says Hurghada is a gateway for day trips to Luxor and Cairo run by local operators. The coach to Luxor takes 4 to 5 hours each way according to Wikivoyage (EN, DE), and Wikivoyage (EN) calls a day return most of a 20-hour day; many travellers stay overnight. Cairo is about 6 hours by coach.
Driving
Wikivoyage (DE) describes chaotic city traffic and some cars driving without lights at night. For excursions, a driver or tour operator is usually simpler than a rental car.

When to go
Almost year-round sun, very hot summers
Winter (December to February)
Mild by day: about 22 C in January according to Wikipedia (EN) and Wikivoyage (EN), cooler nights. The sea falls to about 21 C in February, and the north-east wind can spoil beach days (Wikivoyage DE).
Spring (March to May)
Temperatures climb quickly under generous sun; the sea is still fresh in March, so a wetsuit can help. Wikivoyage (DE) recommends March to May for desert safaris.
Summer (June to August)
Very hot: afternoon highs above 34 C in August, depending on the source; the sea reaches 28 C (Wikipedia EN, FR). Swimming is lovely, sightseeing in full sun less so.
Autumn (September to November)

The climate is desert: rainfall is minimal (under 25 mm a year according to Wikipedia EN and DE) and sunshine averages over 9 hours a day (Wikipedia DE, Wikivoyage DE). Daily highs range from about 22 C in January to above 34 C in August, and the sea from 21 C in February to 28 C in August.
