Essaouira, known for centuries as Mogador, is a port on Morocco's Atlantic coast with about 83,000 inhabitants in the 2024 census according to Wikipedia (EN). Its medina, laid out in the 18th century under Sultan Mohammed ben Abdallah, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001. Ramparts, cannons, a blue-boat harbour, art galleries and gnawa music make it a short, very photogenic escape. Fares depend heavily on the season, so a SniperAir alert on ESU saves you checking departures every day.
Airport and getting into town
A small airport to the south-east, or Marrakech and Agadir about 175 km away
Essaouira-Mogador (ESU)
Essaouira-Mogador airport lies south-east of town: 18 km according to Wikivoyage (FR), 16 km according to Wikivoyage (EN) and about 15 km per Wikipedia (DE), so roughly fifteen kilometres. Wikivoyage (EN) mentions a city bus about once an hour, an airport shuttle and the grand taxi, which can carry up to six people. Check times before you go: this kind of information ages quickly. The big neighbouring airports, Marrakech and Agadir, are about 175 km away by road per Wikipedia (DE).
Distances are approximate (Wikivoyage FR and EN, Wikipedia DE); times change. We do not give fares.
By road, coaches link Essaouira with Marrakech in about three hours per Wikivoyage (EN), and with Agadir and Casablanca. Comparing ESU with RAK (Marrakech) or AGA (Agadir) can open up other flight and price options, which SniperAir can also track.
Landmarks
Ramparts from the 1760s, a blue harbour and a medina of thuya wood
The present town was laid out from 1760 for the sultan, with the help of the French architect Theodore Cornut according to Wikipedia (EN, FR); it combines a regular plan, ramparts and medina lanes. The places below are illustrated; Moulay Hassan Square, the kasbah and Mogador island are described in text only.
The ramparts and cannons
The fortifications still carry their original cannons and are worth it for the ocean view. Wikivoyage (EN) calls Essaouira a perfect example of a late 18th-century fortified town and adds that Orson Welles filmed his Othello here. Evening light is at its best.

The harbour Skala
This crenellated stone tower overlooks the fishermen's quay. Wikivoyage (EN) places the harbour citadel in the medina and says foreigners pay to enter: hours and conditions change, so check on site. From the platform you can watch the boats come and go.

The harbour, its gulls and its boats
The fishing harbour is a constant scene of life: blue boats, nets, auctions and gulls. Fishermen sell their catch there, which can be grilled on the spot at the small market stalls, per Wikivoyage (EN). Mogador island opposite partly shelters the bay from the wind.

The Skala rampart walk
On the big platform a row of bronze cannons faces the sea, and you can stroll along the walls. Wikivoyage (EN) suggests watching the sunset from the seawall at Moulay Hassan Square.

The medina lanes
Essaouira's medina is airier than those of Fez or Marrakech, with blue doors, thuya-wood shops and painting galleries. You can wander safely, following the main lanes to the Bab Doukkala and Bab Marrakech gates.

The harbour in evening light
Dozens of boats moor in front of the fortifications. This is the image that made Essaouira famous: a working port at the foot of the medina walls, on the Atlantic.

Moulay Hassan Square, the kasbah and Mogador, in text
Moulay Hassan Square, near the port, is a meeting place, terrace spot and sunset viewpoint. The kasbah, the oldest part of the medina, housed the royal administration and European consulates according to Wikipedia (FR). Mogador island is a nature reserve: it cannot be visited without official authorisation per Wikivoyage (EN).
Museums and culture
A provincial museum, Jewish memory and painting galleries
The Sidi Mohammed ben Abdallah museum
Housed in a former 19th-century mansion, this museum was chosen in 1980 to present the province's historical heritage according to Wikipedia (FR). Wikipedia (DE) lists weapons, coins, clothing, musical instruments, jewellery and crafts, including thuya-wood objects.
Bayt Dakira and Jewish heritage
Bayt Dakira, the House of Memory, is devoted to the coexistence of Essaouira's Jewish and Muslim communities. King Mohammed VI visited it on 15 January 2020 per Wikipedia (EN). The mellah and its synagogues, such as the Haim Pinto one, recall a community that made up as much as half the population in the 19th century.
Galleries and gnawa music
The town has a real painting tradition: the Frederic Damgaard gallery, opened in 1988, is cited as the oldest, alongside the Espace Othello. The Gnaoua and World Music Festival has taken place each year around the end of June since 1998 per Wikipedia (EN); it draws large crowds, which affects flight and room prices.
Food and drink
Grilled fish at the port, argan oil and mint tea
Fish from the port
In Essaouira the best way to eat fish is to buy it at the harbour and have it cooked at the small market stalls, says Wikivoyage (EN); sardines and conger eel are the main catches per Wikipedia (DE). More traditional restaurants also line the port and Moulay Hassan Square.
The argan tree and its products
The argan tree is the region's main plant resource according to Wikipedia (FR); it yields a food and cosmetic oil. Cooperatives around town explain how it is made, and excursions are offered. Check that it is a real production site and not just a shop.
Markets and drinks
The fish market and the medina souks give a sense of local life. Mint tea, fresh orange juice and pastries are enjoyed on terraces. We cite no addresses or prices.
Getting around
On foot in the medina, by bus or grand taxi for the surroundings
In the medina
Essaouira is compact: you can cross it on foot, from the port to the beach and the souks. Cars do not enter the lanes; they park at the medina gates.
Taxis and buses
Petit taxis serve the town. Wikivoyage (EN) notes that buses leave from the bus station and that tickets often need to be bought in advance, as some departures are full or cancelled.
The surroundings
Essaouira's beach, swept by the trade winds, is popular with windsurfers and kitesurfers. Diabat to the south and Sidi Kaouki further on are reached by taxi or on foot depending on the case. Check wind and swimming conditions before going in the water.
Budget and precautions
A budget to follow closely, especially at festival time
Price level
We give no ranges or figures, as we could not cross-check them on two independent, up-to-date sources. Wikivoyage (EN) notes that seafood sold to tourists can be pricey, while fish bought at the quay is more affordable.
Flights
The flight remains the most variable cost. SniperAir tracks prices to ESU and compares them with the route's history, but it does not sell or book tickets. Marrakech (RAK) and Agadir (AGA) let you widen the watch.
Formalities and precautions
Entry formalities depend on your nationality: check them on official sites and read your country's travel advice. When you arrive by bus, touts may offer rooms: compare before accepting. Wind can make swimming difficult.
When to go
A mild, windy climate all year round
Winter (December to February)
Mild and slightly rainy; rain falls mostly in these months per Wikipedia (DE), about 350 mm a year.
Spring (March to May)
Pleasant days and events: the Gazelles Rally arrives at the end of March per Wikivoyage (FR).
Summer (June to September)
Mild rather than very hot thanks to the ocean, but the trade winds blow; the Gnaoua festival is around the end of June.
Autumn (October to November)
Soft light, with daytime highs around 21 to 22 C until October per Wikipedia (FR); the Atlantic Andalusian festival is held in late October per Wikivoyage (FR).
The climate is mild semi-arid, strongly influenced by the ocean and the Canary current, according to Wikipedia (FR): mild, slightly wet winters and summers that are only just warm, dry and free of excessive heat. The trade winds keep the town cool in summer, which makes it popular when the interior is scorching. Check the forecast before you travel.
