Hangzhou and West Lake, a UNESCO landscape in the middle of the city

Free, open around the clock

Hangzhou is the capital of Zhejiang, on the Qiantang River, and West Lake sits inside the city. The West Lake Cultural Landscape is a UNESCO World Heritage Site covering about 3,323 hectares. The lake is free and open 24 hours. Su Shi, better known as Su Dongpo, built a 2.8 km causeway across it in 1089 with about 200,000 workers, and a stone path lined with willows and peach blossom is still among the best-known walks.

Around the lake

Walking the shore is about 12 km, roughly five hours at a slow pace. Public bikes are widespread and cost about 1 to 2 yuan per ride, though cycling is banned right beside the lake along about half the route. Several kinds of boat, from dragon boats to paddled boats, work on the water.
