Red tiles, blue sea
A trip to Qingdao, between red roofs and skyscrapers
Qingdao, whose name means Verdant Island, is a Shandong port city on the Yellow Sea. An old local saying sums it up as red tiles, green trees, blue sky and blue sea. European villas with red roofs, churches and a seafront promenade sit beside a modern skyline, and the city is home to Tsingtao, China's second-largest domestic beer brand. More than 10 million people live in the wider municipality.
The Olympic sailing city
During the 2008 Olympic Games, Qingdao hosted the sailing events along its coast. The hilly shoreline and the long seafront walk of around 40 km make the bay easy to enjoy on foot.
A colonial past
How a Chinese fishing port became Tsingtau
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| 1897-1898 | German troops occupy the bay; on 6 March 1898 a 99-year lease is signed and the city becomes the capital of the Kiautschou territory under the name Tsingtau. |
| 1903 | The Germania Brewery is founded and later becomes Tsingtao Brewery. |
| 1914 | Japan takes the city after the Siege of Tsingtao, and the German garrison surrenders on 7 November. |
| 1922 | Qingdao returns to Chinese rule on 10 December. |
This double occupation left an architectural legacy that is still very visible in the old town and around Badaguan.
German heritage
Badaguan, St. Michael's and the old town
Badaguan
A 1930s resort district of red-tiled villas along tree-lined streets, and the best walk for colonial architecture. It is free to stroll.
St. Michael's Cathedral
The city's main Catholic church, completed in 1934, rises above the old town. Nearby are the Protestant church and the former German Governor's Residence, which can be visited.
Zhanqiao Pier
The icon of the seafront, with the Huilan Pavilion at its end. From November to April, Siberian black-headed gulls overwinter here.

Tsingtao beer
Tsingtao beer, a trip in itself
The Tsingtao Brewery Museum
It sits in the original German brewery and tells the story of China's best-known beer. Tickets include a sample of fresh beer, and some versions add an hour of drinking.
The beer festival
The Qingdao International Beer Festival takes place at the end of August, with large beer tents, food and entertainment by the sea. It is a highlight if your dates allow, even if it has a much smaller international crowd than in the past.
Beaches
Qingdao's city beaches and the best time to go
Beach No. 1 is the central and most convenient, and also the most crowded. Beach No. 2 is smaller and quieter, and Shilaoren (Old Stone Man) is long and broad with the biggest waves. Laoshan Beach is ringed by mountains with clear water, but taxis are harder to find. Across Jiaozhou Bay, Golden Beach and Silver Beach in Huangdao are free, with Golden Beach at its best from June to August.
Good to know
Algal blooms can leave a rotten-egg smell on some beaches in summer, and litter is a problem on others. Bring sunscreen, which is hard to buy on the sand.
Summer
The sea peaks at about 25 °C in late August, and you can swim for roughly two months either side. Beaches are humid and crowded, and the beer festival closes the season.
Autumn
September and October are the best months according to Wikivoyage, with mild weather and thinner crowds.
Winter
Cold and dry with occasional snow, but quieter and cheaper. January averages about 0 °C.
Seafood
Shandong seafood, steamed, grilled and dumpled
Qingdao cooking belongs to Shandong cuisine and is built around seafood: steamed clams, braised sea cucumber, grilled squid and mackerel dumplings.
Where to eat
Yunxiao Road is the main restaurant street, and Taidong Pedestrian Street is the place for clothes, snacks and street life (watch for pickpockets). Qingdao MixC, directly connected to Metro Lines 2 and 3, is the largest shopping complex in Shandong.
Laoshan
Mount Laoshan and the bay
Laoshan, south-east of downtown, rises to 1,133 m and has some of the city's best beaches. Metro Line 4 reaches the scenic area at Dahedong. Across the bay in Huangdao, Dazhu Mountain is famous for its azaleas from March to May, and Langyatai is a historic coastal site. From Qingdao you can also continue to Weifang.
