Xiamen and Gulangyu, a pair facing the strait

On the southeast coast, across the Taiwan Strait, Xiamen, formerly Amoy, combines a modern skyline, a prestigious university, a waterfront and historic quarters. The Kinmen Islands, run by Taiwan, lie only a few kilometers away across the bay.

Its tourist fame rests first on Gulangyu, a small car-free island that UNESCO listed in 2017 and that is nicknamed Piano Island. The city and the island are two moods to enjoy one after the other, the bustle and then the calm.

Gulangyu, an island of consulates and churches

An international settlement

Foreign residents organized a community on the island after the Treaty of Nanking in 1842. Its land regulations were approved by the Qing government in 1902, and thirteen countries eventually held extraterritorial privileges there. Consulates, churches and schools give the island a largely Victorian-era look.

UNESCO status

Gulangyu was inscribed on 8 July 2017 as a historic international settlement. More than 10 million people visit each year, so mornings and weekdays are calmer.

No cars, no bicycles

Only small electric buggies and service vehicles run on the island, which you reach by ferry from downtown Xiamen. Plan a full morning or afternoon on foot.

China's only piano museum

The Gulangyu Piano Museum

The island has the only piano museum in China, which shows more than 40 old pianos donated by the pianist Hu Youyi, including a mechanical pedal piano. It sits above the Shuzhuang Garden, built in 1913, and one ticket has been reported to open both. Sunlight Rock, the island's highest point, gives a view over red roofs and the sea.

Xinjie Church, downtown, is described as China's oldest Protestant church, and Xiamen University is among the most prestigious in the country.

Shacha noodles and oyster omelette

Xiamen's signature dish is shacha mian, thin noodles in a dark broth made from a peanut-based satay paste, saltier and less sweet than the Southeast Asian versions. Also try the oyster omelette, fish balls, ginger duck and peanut soup.

Fujian tulou and Kinmen

Fast trains from Xiamen North reach Fuzhou in about 100 minutes and Shenzhen in about 3.5 hours. Kinmen, administered by Taiwan, is only a few kilometers across the bay; ferry services there have changed over the years, so check before planning. In Fujian, the round earthen houses known as tulou are also a World Heritage Site.

Airport, BRT, metro and ferry

XMN

Xiamen Gaoqi

The city's international airport lies on the island, about 20 minutes from downtown by taxi.

Locally, a bus rapid transit system and the metro, whose first line opened in December 2017, move you around. For Gulangyu, the ferry from Xiamen is the only way.
