Airport and transfer
A modern airport about forty kilometres north
Kempegowda International (Devanahalli)
The airport is near Devanahalli, about 35 to 40 km north of the centre depending on the source. It replaced the old HAL airport, closer to the city, in 2008. The trip by taxi, car or bus takes at least an hour and much longer at rush hour, as traffic is heavy. Morning fog can disrupt some early flights between mid-November and mid-February. Allow a comfortable margin, especially for a departing flight.
Distances and times are indicative (Wikipedia EN and DE, Wikivoyage EN) and vary with traffic. Sources give between 35 and 40 km for the distance from the centre.
The garden city
Vidhana Soudha, parks and greenery
Bangalore, officially Bengaluru since 2014, is the capital of Karnataka and had about 8.4 million inhabitants at the 2011 census. Set on the Deccan plateau at around 900 m above sea level, it is nicknamed India's "Garden City" for its many parks and large trees. It is also a major IT hub, sometimes called India's Silicon Valley.
The Vidhana Soudha
Seat of the Karnataka legislature and government offices, the Vidhana Soudha is the city's signature building, with its large central dome and long colonnaded facades. It is admired from outside, from the gardens that surround it.

Cubbon Park and the central library
Created in 1870, Cubbon Park covers about 120 hectares in the heart of the city. It holds the State Central Library, in a pink neoclassical building, and an aquarium. It is the ideal spot for a break in the shade.

Lalbagh botanical garden
Lalbagh garden, laid out in the 1760s and enlarged in the 19th century, covers nearly 100 hectares. Its paths, large trees, topiary and a glasshouse built in 1889 on the model of London's Crystal Palace make it one of the most pleasant walks in the city.

Palaces and heritage
Bangalore Palace and Tipu Sultan's Summer Palace
Bangalore Palace
Built in the 19th century for a maharaja of Mysore, Bangalore Palace draws on the Tudor style and Windsor Castle, with crenellated towers and pale stone. It lies about 5 km north of the centre and is open to visitors.

Towers, battlements and verandas
The stone facades, round towers and wrought-iron balconies give the palace the air of an English castle in southern India. The grounds sometimes host events; check visiting hours before you go.

Tipu Sultan's Summer Palace
In the old town, Tipu Sultan's Summer Palace, begun in 1781 and completed in 1791, is an example of Indo-Islamic architecture, now maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India. Admission is much higher for foreigners than for Indians.
Excursions
Nandi Hills and Mysore
Nandi Hills
About 60 km from Bangalore, Nandi Hills is a hilltop popular for sunrise and sunset views, with a pleasant climate all year. Many locals go at weekends; leave early to catch the sunrise.

Mysore and beyond
Mysore, a former royal capital, and Srirangapatna can be visited on a day trip or longer; Badami and Karnataka's national parks call for a longer stay.
Museums and culture
History, science and visual art
The state museum
The Government Museum in Bengaluru, founded in 1865, is one of the oldest museums in India; it presents archaeological and geological objects, including old jewellery, sculpture, coins and inscriptions.
The industrial and technological museum
The Visvesvaraya Museum, in Cubbon Park, displays industrial products, scientific models and engines; it suits families well.
Art at Chitrakala Parishath
Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath is a visual art complex with 18 galleries, holding paintings, sculpture and folk art, including Mysore paintings and leather puppets. Each January it hosts an affordable art fair, Chitra Santhe. Check closing days before you travel.
Food and drink
Dosa, filter coffee and Karnataka cuisine
The classics
Bangalore is a good place to try South Indian vegetarian food: masala dosa, butter dosa, idli, and Udupi cuisine. Karnataka dishes include bisi bele bath, a rice dish with lentils and spices, and mysore pak, a sweet made of gram flour and ghee. Simple, old-style local restaurants serve traditional filter coffee.
Where to go out
Pubs and bars are concentrated around MG Road, Brigade Road, Church Street and Residency Road. Koramangala, with its lively street, also draws a young crowd.
Water and precautions
Prefer bottled or filtered water. Choose clean, busy places, and be careful with seafood, since the coast is far away.
Getting around
Namma Metro, buses and traffic
Heavy traffic
Traffic is among the most congested in India: allow generous margins, especially at rush hour and in heavy rain, which can bring roads to a standstill.
Namma Metro
The metro (Namma Metro) is the most reliable way to avoid traffic, but its network remains limited, with several lines (purple, green and yellow). Tickets are sold at counters or machines, sometimes with Indian mobile payment only; a rechargeable card is handy.
Buses and rickshaws
City buses are plentiful, but signs are sometimes only in Kannada. Rickshaws are everywhere; agree the price before boarding or ask for the meter, and note that some drivers speak mainly Kannada.
Budget
A reasonable budget compared with Europe
Bangalore is cheaper than Europe for local meals, city transport and simple accommodation, but it is one of India's pricier cities for good hotels and fashionable districts. Monument entrance fees cost more for foreigners. We give no figures because they vary with the season and the exchange rate: check the official sites.
The plane ticket remains the most variable item of a trip. SniperAir tracks flights to BLR closely and compares them with the route's price history.
