Cheap flights to Mumbai, a century of history in one afternoon

Looking for cheap flights to Mumbai? You are heading for India's financial capital, home to the Reserve Bank of India and the BSE and NSE stock exchanges, and to Bollywood, one of the world's most prolific film industries. The city produces about 5% of India's GDP and a quarter of its industrial output, and its metropolitan region is home to well over 18 million people.

Bombay, then Mumbai

Portuguese in the 16th century, British from 1661 and leased to the East India Company in 1668, the city became the capital of Maharashtra in 1960. The Government of India made the name Mumbai official in November 1995. What makes it unique is how much of that story you can see in a single walk: a UNESCO-listed waterfront of Victorian Gothic and Art Deco buildings, an imperial arch on the harbour and, an hour away by boat, a rock-cut island temple.

The Gateway of India, where the Raj arrived and left

A 26-meter arch on the harbour

Designed by George Wittet to mark the landing of King George V in 1911, the Indo-Saracenic Gateway of India had its foundation stone laid in 1913 and opened in 1924. On 28 February 1948, the last British troops to leave India marched out through it. Access is free, and the five jetties at its foot are where ferries leave for Elephanta.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus

Still known to many as Victoria Terminus, the great railway station is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, listed together with the city's ensemble of Victorian Gothic and Art Deco buildings. India's first railway line, from Bombay to Thane, opened in 1853.

Marine Drive, the Queen's Necklace

This 3.6 km seafront promenade curves around the bay, lined with Art Deco buildings. Only Miami is said to have more beachfront Art Deco. For kulfi, head to Chowpatty.

Elephanta Caves, a rock-cut temple island

The Elephanta Caves, carved between the 6th and 7th centuries, sit on an island about 7 km offshore. Ferries leave the Gateway of India every 30 minutes from 9 am, with the last boat back at 5:30 pm. The site is closed on Mondays. Allow half a day, and check the current entry and ferry fares with the Archaeological Survey of India and the ferry operator before you go.

Vada pav, pav bhaji and the dabbawalas

Street foodWhat to know

Pav bhajiA street-food staple to add to the list
Bhelpuri and pani puriClassic snacks to try alongside the rest
KulfiThe place to finish is Chowpatty

Eat like a Mumbaikar

The city's signature snack is the vada pav, sold for very little from street carts. Add pav bhaji, bhelpuri and pani puri, and finish with kulfi at Chowpatty.

A delivery system from 1890

Every day, around 5,000 dabbawalas move close to 200,000 lunchboxes across the city, a system founded in 1890 by Mahadeo Havaji Bachche. You will often hear that they make one error in six million deliveries; that figure is an unverified extrapolation, and no Six Sigma certificate was ever awarded. The real thing is impressive enough.

Markets, laundries and a national park inside the city

The other Mumbai

Dhobi Ghat, the open-air laundry, Crawford Market and the street stalls of Colaba Causeway round out a first visit. Dharavi packs about a million people into some 2.4 km2, and guided walks often combine it with Dhobi Ghat and the dabbawalas. At the opposite extreme, Sanjay Gandhi National Park covers more than 100 km2 of green within the city limits.

Arriving in Mumbai and getting around

BOM

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International

The main airport, roughly 28 km from the center and 22 to 25 km from Colaba and the Gateway of India depending on the terminal. Count on 60 to 90 minutes by road to South Mumbai. A second airport, Navi Mumbai International, opened to commercial flights in December 2025.

The suburban railway carries about 7.5 million passengers a day, and the metro, whose first line opened in 2014, now includes Line 3 (Aqua), fully running since October 2025. Black-and-yellow taxis run on the meter, and app cabs are widely available.
