City of Nawabs
Lucknow food, manners and monuments
Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh on the Gomti River, is known as the City of Nawabs. Under the Nawabs of Awadh, it became a northern Indian center of music, Kathak dance, Urdu poetry and refined cooking. It is still a city of tehzeeb, a code of courtesy summed up in two words, "pehle aap", after you.
Lucknow food is the main reason many travelers come: in 2025, UNESCO named Lucknow a Creative City of Gastronomy, the second Indian city in that category after Hyderabad.

Bara Imambara
A vaulted hall without beams
Built between 1780 and 1784, partly to give work to people during a famine, the Bara Imambara is a Shia congregation hall. Its central hall rises more than 15 m without a single beam, often called one of the largest unsupported vaulted halls in the world. Its architect, Kifayatullah of Delhi, is buried inside.
The complex also includes the Asafi Mosque, a five-storey stepwell and the Bhul Bhulaiya, a labyrinth of identical doorways. Come early in the morning, before 7 am, and hire an official ASI guide.
Rumi Darwaza
The great gateway of 1784
Open at all hours
Built in 1784, the same year as the Bara Imambara, the Rumi Darwaza is Lucknow's monumental gateway. It can be seen freely at any time of day. The old city also has the Hussainabad Clock Tower, 67 m tall, and the Chota Imambara, the white-domed "Palace of Lights" with its chandeliers, built in the 19th century.

1857
The Residency and the Rebellion
After the East India Company annexed Awadh in 1856, Lucknow became a center of the 1857 Rebellion and the Residency was besieged until the British recaptured the city in March 1858. The ruins still bear cannon-shot scars and house a museum.
Also worth seeing: La Martiniere College, the former palace of Claude Martin, the State Museum and Janeshwar Mishra Park, described as one of the largest parks in Asia.
Chikankari
White-on-white embroidery from Chowk
Chikankari, Lucknow's white-on-white embroidery, has 32 types of stitch and holds a Geographical Indication. Legend credits Empress Noor Jahan with its origin, while scholars point to Persian embroidery. Its main market is Chowk, which is also the place to buy attars.
