Airport and transfer
A large airport south of the city, linked by bus and taxi
Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (Shamshabad)
Modern and well organised, Hyderabad airport is at Shamshabad, about 22 km south of the centre: it is far from the city, but the Outer Ring Road links it well to the road network. By taxi, ride-hailing or a prepaid taxi counter, allow 45 minutes to over an hour depending on traffic. Air-conditioned Pushpak buses serve Secunderabad and the MGBS bus station near the Charminar, among others. A metro link to the airport was still planned according to our sources: check before relying on it.
Secunderabad and Nampally (Hyderabad Deccan) stations
The city's main stations, with trains to Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru and Delhi; Secunderabad is a major rail junction in the north. Both stations are linked to the Hyderabad Metro. By road, Bengaluru is about 560 km away, Chennai about 750 km and Mumbai about 800 km.
Distances and times are indicative (Wikipedia EN, FR and DE, Wikivoyage EN and DE) and vary with traffic and schedules. Sources give about 22 km between the airport and the centre.
Charminar and the old city
The City of Pearls and the Charminar
Hyderabad, capital of Telangana, was founded in 1591 by Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah on the banks of the Musi. It has more than 6 million inhabitants (2011 census) and remains closely tied to its heritage as the city of the Nizams, notably in the old city, where lanes spread out around the Charminar. Pearls gave it its nickname, the City of Pearls, and its cuisine its worldwide fame.
The Charminar
Built in 1591 after the end of a plague epidemic, this great triumphal arch with four minarets is the city's symbol. A mosque occupies its upper floor. It stands at a crossroads of the old city, amid lively bazaars; the Mecca Masjid, a great mosque begun in 1614 and completed in 1687, is a few steps away. To enter places of worship, take off your shoes and cover shoulders and knees.

Bangles and the Laad Bazaar
At the foot of the Charminar, the Laad Bazaar (or Chudi Bazaar) is known for its bangles and pearls, in a crush of shops and passers-by. Shops stack bangles of glass, lacquer and sparkling stones by the hundred, whole shelves in vivid colours. Bargain calmly and compare before you buy.

Golconda
Golconda Fort and the Qutb Shahi tombs
Golconda's mosques and ramparts
A citadel on a granite hill of about 120 m, Golconda Fort, about ten kilometres west of the centre, was the capital of the Qutb Shahi dynasty before Hyderabad was founded. It is ringed by crenellated ramparts; its minarets and mosques rise above the walls.

The citadel and its gardens
You have to climb to reach the upper parts of the fort and enjoy the view; the gardens at the foot of the hill and the ramparts can be seen in half a day. The fort was famous for its acoustic system, which signalled the arrival of visitors from the entrance. The tombs of the Qutb Shahi kings nearby complete the visit.

Palaces and lake
Chowmahalla and the Hussain Sagar Buddha
Chowmahalla Palace
The official residence of the Nizams, begun around 1750 and completed in the mid-19th century in an Indo-European style, Chowmahalla Palace combines courtyards, pavilions and decorated facades. It can be visited in around one to two hours and combines easily with the Charminar.

The Hussain Sagar Buddha
In the centre of the city, Hussain Sagar lake separates Hyderabad from Secunderabad. A great monolithic statue of the standing Buddha rises on the lake. The shores, parks and promenades draw residents in the late afternoon. In the west of the city, Cyberabad concentrates the IT and biotech companies that have grown since the 1990s.

Museums and culture
Salar Jung, Nizam palaces and cinema
The Salar Jung Museum
One of India's great museums displays the collections gathered by Salar Jung before India's independence: Indian and European art objects, sculptures and manuscripts. Allow half a day and check opening hours before you go.
The Nizam palaces
Besides Chowmahalla, the Nizam's Museum and the privately owned Falaknuma Palace keep objects, photographs and memorabilia from the Nizam era; access may depend on specific conditions.
Painting and crafts
The region is known for the Golconda and Hyderabad schools of painting, branches of Deccan painting, as well as bidri ware, filigree and Wootz steel.
Cinema and leisure
Ramoji Film City, a huge film complex, theme park and shooting location for many Telugu and Hindi films, is one of the region's big outings.
Food and drink
Biryani, haleem and Irani chai
Hyderabadi biryani
Biryani, fragrant rice cooked slowly with meat or vegetables, is Hyderabad's emblematic dish, blending Mughal and Nizam cooking. Hyderabad has been a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy since 2019. It is served with mirchi ka salan, a chilli sauce, and a yoghurt chutney.

Haleem and sweets
Haleem, a stew of wheat, meat and spices, is eaten mainly during Ramadan. Among the sweets are double ka meetha and khubani ka meetha, an apricot dessert.
Irani chai and Osmania biscuits
In cafes, sweet, fragrant Irani milk tea is enjoyed with Osmania biscuits, small buttery biscuits. Choose busy stalls and, ideally, go with a local.
Cuisine and drinks
Hyderabad's cooking runs from dishes of the Nizams' court to spicy Andhra specialities.
Getting around
Metro, buses, auto-rickshaws and taxis
Hyderabad Metro
The metro has three lines (red, blue and green) and serves several districts, with frequent trains. It is often faster than the road on the corridors it serves.
MMTS and buses
The MMTS suburban network serves only a few areas. State buses (TGSRTC, formerly TSRTC), mainly at the MGBS bus station, are very crowded at rush hour.
Auto-rickshaws and apps
Auto-rickshaws are everywhere; agree the fare before getting in, and beware of drivers who offer to take you to a pearl shop. Ride-hailing apps work well.
Good to know
Traffic is heavy at rush hour, and the city is not pleasant to walk, except in the lanes of the old city.
Budget
An affordable budget compared with Europe
Hyderabad remains an affordable destination: local meals, city transport and simple accommodation cost much less than in Europe, and accommodation is cheaper than in some other large Indian cities. We give no figures because they vary with the season and the exchange rate: check the official sites.
The plane ticket remains the most variable item of a trip. SniperAir tracks flights to HYD closely and compares them with the route's price history.
