Adana is one of Turkey's biggest cities, with over 1.5 million inhabitants and the fifth largest in the country according to Wikipedia (FR, DE, ES). It spreads along the Seyhan river in the heart of the Çukurova plain, about 30 km from the Mediterranean coast. Turks associate it with its kebab, salted turnip juice (şalgam), oranges and cotton growing, says Wikipedia (FR). Since August 2024 the city's airport is Çukurova (COV), in the Tarsus district of neighbouring Mersin Province; it replaces the old Adana Şakirpaşa airport (ADA), closed to commercial flights. Fares vary by season, and a SniperAir alert saves you comparing every day: you set a budget, we compare new fares with the route's real price history and let you know.

Çukurova, an airport between Adana and Mersin

COV

Çukurova International (COV)

Çukurova International Airport (COV) lies in the Tarsus district of Mersin Province and serves both Mersin and Adana, according to Wikipedia (EN, FR). It opened on 11 August 2024 and replaces Adana Şakirpaşa airport, which sat in the city centre with no room to grow. Wikivoyage (EN) puts it about 32 km west of Adana and Wikipedia (DE) a little under 30 km; Wikipedia (EN) gives about 20 km from Tarsus (Wikivoyage says 15 km), so we give only orders of magnitude. Buses reach Tarsus and Adana; timetables change.

Approximate, conflicting distances between Wikipedia (EN, DE) and Wikivoyage (EN); the old Adana airport (ADA) has had no commercial flights since August 2024. No transfer fares are given.

Mersin is about 65 km west of Adana and Tarsus lies between them, so the cities combine easily. Gaziantep (GZT) and Antalya (AYT) can be tracked in parallel; trains link Adana with Mersin and Kayseri.

A Roman bridge, a great mosque and a river

Adana's historic heart is compact and best explored on foot from the bridge. The five places below are illustrated; the Great Mosque (Ulu Cami), the clock tower and St Paul's church are described in text only further down.

The Seyhan and its bridges

The Seyhan runs through the city from north to south before reaching the Cilician plain. According to Wikipedia (FR) the river is the ancient Saros; it is dammed north of the city, creating a lake in 1955, says Wikivoyage (EN).

The Sabancı Central Mosque

Built in 1998, this huge mosque dominates the skyline with its six minarets, the four inner ones 99 m high, according to Wikivoyage (EN). The interior is richly decorated with calligraphy and Iznik tiles.

The Taşköprü bridge

This Roman bridge over the Seyhan probably dates from AD 120 to 135 and lay on the trade routes from Persia and Anatolia to the Mediterranean, says Wikivoyage (EN). It has been a footbridge since 2007 and a popular place to stroll.

The central park

Merkez Park lies north of the Sabancı mosque, by the water, according to Wikivoyage (EN). It is a place to relax, with lawns and paths.

The Seyhan riverbanks

The tree- and palm-lined banks offer views of the mosque and bridges. According to Wikivoyage (EN) the Seyhan also hosts several restaurants and leisure areas, mostly around the lake.

The Great Mosque (Ulu Cami), built from 1513 to 1541, is the core of a religious complex with a well-preserved madrasa and mausoleums, according to Wikivoyage (EN). The Great Clock Tower (Büyük Saat), 32 m high, dates from 1879-1882. The Oil Mosque (Yağ Cami) was built around 1250 as the Armenian church of St Jacob and became a mosque around 1380. Finally, St Paul's Church (Bebekli Kilise), in Italianate style, dates from 1870.

Museums of archaeology, history and cinema

The Archaeology Museum

Installed since 2019 in a former textile mill, it holds a rich collection that needs two to three hours, says Wikivoyage (EN). Check opening hours before you go.

The Atatürk Museum

This traditional 19th-century mansion, where Atatürk stayed in 1923, became a museum in 1981, according to Wikivoyage (EN); signage is in Turkish only.

The Cinema Museum

Next to Atatürk House, it offers exhibitions and screenings on the history of Turkish cinema, including the film-maker Yılmaz Güney, says Wikivoyage (EN).

The region: Tarsus and Karataş

Tarsus, between Adana and Mersin, is the birthplace of St Paul and keeps Roman-era sites, says Wikivoyage (EN). Karataş, about 55 km south, is the closest beach to Adana, with the ruins of ancient Magarsus.

Adana kebab, şalgam and oranges

Adana kebab

The city's great speciality is a skewer of minced lamb, according to Wikivoyage (EN). Kebab restaurants are mostly on the rim of the old town rather than at its centre. We list no addresses because they change.

Şalgam and orange juice

Wikipedia (FR) lists şalgam suyu (turnip juice) and oranges among the products Turks associate with Adana. Sour and salty, şalgam goes well with grilled meat.

Cafes and sweets

Cafes and pastry shops abound near the station and the Seyhan bank. Wikivoyage (EN) notes there are more pubs than elsewhere in Turkey, mostly to the north towards the station, owing to the foreign presence linked to the İncirlik base.

Getting around: on foot, by bus and metro

On foot

The city sprawls but the historic district is compact: walking is enough for the main sights, according to Wikivoyage (EN).

Buses, minibuses and metro

A wide network of buses and minibuses (dolmuş) serves the city; the Adana metro is a single 14 km line across the centre, little used by visitors, says Wikivoyage (EN). Taxi fares are comparable to the rest of the country.

Station and bus terminal

The railway station, built in 1912 on the Berlin-Baghdad line, is 1 km north of the centre; the bus terminal is 4 km west, according to Wikivoyage (EN). Trains link Adana with Mersin (about 90 minutes) and Kayseri (about 6 hours).

A variable budget, to compare before you go

Price level

We give no price ranges because we could not cross-check them with two independent, recent sources. The currency is the Turkish lira, and inflation makes published prices age quickly.

Flights

The flight is still the most variable item. SniperAir tracks prices to COV and compares them with the route's history; it does not sell or book tickets. Gaziantep (GZT) or Antalya (AYT) can complete your watch.

Entry rules and precautions

Entry requirements depend on your nationality: check official sites and your government's travel advice. Turkey is an earthquake zone: follow local instructions. Summer heat is strong: drink plenty of water and avoid the hottest hours.
