Cheap flights to Antalya, the capital of Turkish tourism
Antalya calls itself the capital of Turkish tourism and is the gateway to the Turkish Riviera: a gulf backed by the Taurus Mountains, a Roman and Ottoman old town above an ancient harbour, beaches of pebbles and sand, and ancient cities within an hour by road. More than 16 million foreign visitors came in 2023 according to Wikipedia, which puts Antalya among the most visited cities in the world.
What sets Antalya apart is how close everything is. The Taurus Mountains rise straight behind the city, a Roman and Ottoman old town overlooks an ancient harbour, and some of the best-preserved theatres of antiquity are less than an hour away. The metropolitan area is home to more than two million people, and the local economy also runs on greenhouse farming, citrus, bananas, cotton and yacht building.

Getting to Antalya
An airport about a dozen kilometres from the centre
Antalya Airport
About 10 to 14 km east of the centre depending on the source (13 km according to Wikipedia). Several international terminals and a domestic one.
| Destination from the centre | Distance |
|---|---|
| Phaselis | 35 km |
| Kemer | 43 km |
| Side | 75 km |
| Olympos | 85 km, about 1.5 hours |
| Adrasan | 95 km |
From the airport to the centre
Municipal bus 600 links the terminals with the bus station about every 30 minutes and takes roughly an hour with many stops (Wikipedia DE, Wikivoyage). The AntRay tram has served the airport since 2016; Wikivoyage allows 40 to 50 minutes to the old town, getting off at İsmetpaşa. A taxi is quickest, in the order of 20 to 30 minutes depending on traffic (our estimate, to be confirmed); agree the fare before setting off. A private Havaş shuttle also runs.
Traffic
The airport handled about 38 million passengers in 2024 and over 39 million in 2025 according to Wikipedia, the great majority on international flights.
Kaleiçi
The old town above the ancient harbour
Antalya was founded in the 2nd century BCE by Attalus II of Pergamon under the name Attaleia. It became Roman from 133 BCE, Seljuk from 1207 and Ottoman from 1391, and each era left its mark on Kaleiçi.
Walls, minarets and Ottoman houses
Walk the alleys inside the Roman and Byzantine walls, between Ottoman houses, down to the old harbour. Hadrian's Gate was built in the 130s CE to mark the emperor's visit, the Yivli Minaret dates from 1230, and the Kesik Minare stands nearby. The Antalya Museum completes the picture.
Free sights
Wikivoyage lists Hadrian's Gate, the Hıdırlık Tower and the King's Pool among the sights that can be seen for free, and the Yivli Minaret, 38 m high, as the old town's main landmark.

Beaches
From city sand to hidden coves
| Beach | What to expect |
|---|---|

Museums
Archaeology, ethnography and house museums
The Antalya Museum is the city's main archaeological museum, on Konyaaltı Boulevard: Roman sculpture and finds from Perge and the region. Wikipedia says it was under reconstruction in autumn 2025, so check that it is open before you go. The other places are smaller and sit in the old town.

|---|---|
| Antalya Museum (archaeology) | The city's main museum on Konyaaltı Boulevard; closures and renovation are possible. |
| Suna & İnan Kıraç Kaleiçi Museum | An ethnographic museum opened in 2007, in the old town. |
| Atatürk's House | A house museum; free entry according to Wikivoyage. |
| Ethnographic Museum | Free entry according to Wikivoyage; prices to be checked. |

Prices in Turkish lira change fast. The seven-day MuseumPass Mediterranean (more than 40 sites) stays worthwhile if you chain Aspendos, Perge and Termessos.
Food and drink
Piyaz, şiş köfte and burnt-milk ice cream
Antalya's cooking is that of Turkey's southern coast: dishes built on tahini, vegetables and grilled meat, often seasoned with cumin.
Specialities
Antalya-style piyaz, a white-bean salad with tahini, garlic and walnuts that accompanies şiş köfte (grilled meatball skewers); hibeş, a spicy tahini and cumin dip; tandır kebap, slow-cooked lamb; şakşuka and domates civesi, built on vegetables; bağaça, a spiced tahini pastry. For a snack or dessert, burnt-milk ice cream (yanıksı dondurma) and boiled lupin seeds (tirmis), says Wikipedia.
Where to eat
Wikivoyage lists popular spots for piyaz, köfte and çiğ köfte, plus fish restaurants in the old town and marina. The Doluca vineyard sits at the airport entrance.
Nature close to town
Waterfalls, a cable car and a canyon
Düden Waterfalls
The lower falls drop about 40 m off a cliff straight into the sea, and the viewing platform is free.
Tünektepe cable car
The Tünektepe cable car stopped after the accident of 12 April 2024, and none of our sources confirms it has reopened, so do not count on it without checking.
Köprülü Canyon
A popular day out for rafting, with or without transfer and lunch.
Getting around
Tram, bus and dolmuş
The historic line T2 tram, with cars donated by Nuremberg in 1999, follows the main boulevard through the centre, passes near Hadrian's Gate and Karaalioğlu Park and serves Kalekapısı, the entrance to the old town. Line T1 (AntRay) crosses the city eastwards. Municipal buses and dolmuş minibuses under city control complete the network. According to Wikivoyage a tram or bus ride costs about 1 euro, payable by contactless card or with the AntalyaKart; discount cards are for holders of Turkish ID only.
Taxis
Taxis are plentiful; Wikivoyage advises agreeing the fare beforehand or using a taxi app. For Aspendos, Perge or Termessos a taxi or an organised excursion is simplest.
Budget
Plenty of choice, widely varying prices
Antalya is heavily visited (more than 16 million foreign visitors in 2023 according to Wikipedia), and accommodation ranges from a simple guesthouse in Kaleiçi to an all-inclusive hotel in Lara. Wikivoyage notes that Konyaaltı is cheaper than Lara, package-holiday territory. Prices change a lot between August and the low season, and Turkish inflation makes lira prices outdated quickly: check current rates before booking.
