Ancient Halicarnassus
Bodrum holidays on top of a Wonder of the World
Bodrum holidays mix two things few resorts can offer together: history you can touch and a peninsula of bays, superyacht marinas and nightlife. This white-washed harbour town is ancient Halicarnassus, birthplace of Herodotus, and its Knights' Castle of St Peter was built on the site of the Mausoleum, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The Greek island of Kos is only 20 minutes away by ferry.
The district has nearly 200,000 inhabitants and swells past half a million in summer. Bodrum is also pricier than the rest of Turkey, especially in July and August.
Through the centuries
From Mausolus to the artists' colony
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| 353 BC | Mausolus dies, and Artemisia II builds the Mausoleum. His name gave the world the word mausoleum. |
| 334 BC | Alexander the Great captures the city. |
| Early 15th century | The Knights Hospitaller begin the castle, reusing stone from the Mausoleum, already largely ruined. |
| 1522 | Suleiman the Magnificent takes the castle. |
| 1846 | Marble reliefs, lions and a leopard leave for the British Museum. Plaster copies stand on site. |
| 1923 | The Greek-Turkish population exchange. |
| From 1925 | The exiled writer Cevat Şakir starts the artists' colony that turns into tourism. |
The castle
The Castle of St Peter and its underwater treasures
The castle still keeps the original design and character of the Knights' period. Inside, the Museum of Underwater Archaeology is the only museum in Turkey, and one of the few in the world, devoted to the field. Its collection runs from 1600 BC to the 16th century AD and is headlined by the Uluburun shipwreck and Mycenaean finds. It is open from 08:30 to 18:45, with night visits from 19:00 to 22:00. Parts of the castle may be under restoration, so check before you go.
The rest of ancient Bodrum
The open-air ruins of the Mausoleum are closed on Mondays. The 4th-century BC theatre is free to visit and hosts summer concerts, the Myndos Gate was built by Mausolus himself, and the Zeki Müren Art Museum occupies the singer's former home. For sunset, walk up to the seven windmills on the ridge between Bodrum and Gümbet.
The peninsula
A bay for every kind of traveller
Gümbet
A long, lively beach, and with Bar Street the centre of Bodrum's nightlife.
Bitez and Turgutreis
Calm water and water sports in Bitez, a 5 km beach in Turgutreis.
Gümüşlük
A fishing village on ancient Myndos, with a shallow-water walk to Rabbit Island.
| Beach or village | Atmosphere |
|---|---|
| Gümbet | A long, lively beach and, with Bar Street, the centre of Bodrum's nightlife |
| Bitez | Calm water and water sports |
| Gümüşlük | A fishing village on ancient Myndos, with a shallow-water walk to Rabbit Island |
| Turgutreis | A 5 km beach |
| Yalıkavak | Home to Palmarina, with 620 berths for yachts up to 135 m |
| Kadıkalesi Beach | Sits beside Byzantine ruins, one of the peninsula's roughly 68 public beaches |
The peninsula has around 68 public beaches, from the Ortakent bays to Kadıkalesi Beach beside Byzantine ruins. City beaches get crowded, though, and the clearest water is usually reached by boat: boat day trips visit three to five bays.
Luxury
Yalıkavak and Türkbükü, the glamorous side
Superyachts and a village bazaar
Yalıkavak Marina, nicknamed Palmarina, has 620 berths for yachts up to 135 m, more than 100 boutiques and restaurants such as Zuma and Novikov. It has been voted the world's best superyacht marina and hosts the Bodrum Cup regatta each October, while the old village keeps its Thursday bazaar. Türkbükü is the other luxury address. At the table, look for meze, fresh fish, Bodrum mantısı and çökertme kebab.
