Flights to Dalaman open up the whole Lycian coast

Dalaman is a gateway rather than a destination in itself. The town, on a coastal plain, has just under 50,000 inhabitants, but its airport handles more than 5 million passengers a year and feeds Marmaris, Köyceğiz, Dalyan, Fethiye and Ölüdeniz. A flight to Dalaman is therefore the first step to a lagoon, a turtle beach, a gulf of twelve islands and one of Turkey's great long-distance trails.

Dalaman also holds a record: 48.5 degrees C on 19 July 1973, the third-highest air temperature ever measured in Turkey according to Turkish Wikipedia. The climate is hot Mediterranean, with long, dry summers.

Dalaman Airport

About 6 km south of Dalaman town centre and away from the resorts. A new international terminal opened in 2018; domestic flights (Istanbul, Ankara) use the older terminal. Shuttles, buses, minibuses and private transfers connect it with the resorts of the coast.

None of the main resorts is next door: allow anywhere from 25 minutes to 1 h 30 by road depending on where you are going, and check the transfer time before you book accommodation.

Rock tombs, river boats and a turtle beach

Lycian rock tombs from about 400 BC watch over the river at Dalyan, and boats carry visitors to them and to the ruins of Kaunos. Full-day tours often add a mud bath and İztuzu Beach.

İztuzu, the beach of the loggerheads

This 4.5 km sandbar between the Dalyan delta and the sea receives around 300 loggerhead turtle nests a year and has been protected since 1988. From 1 May to 31 October the beach is closed to the public from 20:00 to 08:00, and vehicles and animals are not allowed. A sea-turtle research and rescue centre, DEKAMER, watches over the nesting areas.

The Blue Lagoon from the sky

Ölüdeniz, 14 km from Fethiye, is a protected inlet of shallow turquoise water inside a nature park, with an entry fee. Next door, Belcekız is a free pebble beach on open water. The swimming season runs from June to October, with the sea around 26 degrees C in August. In winter many businesses close.

Tandem paragliding

Flights take off from Babadağ, at nearly 2,000 m, and last 20 to 40 minutes above the lagoon. From Belcekız, boats also run to Butterfly Valley, below cliffs of about 350 m; the path down from Faralya is only for experienced walkers with a guide.

The ghost village of Kayaköy

About 6,500 Greek residents lived in Kayaköy before the 1923 population exchange, and the 1957 earthquake shook what remained. It inspired the village of Louis de Bernières' novel Birds Without Wings. It is visited as a museum village, 8 km from Fethiye.

Saklıkent, ice-cold water

Even in summer the water in the gorge stays icy. You move on wooden walkways, then sit down at the riverside restaurants to trout or gözleme.

Museums, marinas and bays of the coast

Fethiye, ancient Telmessos

Fethiye is built on ancient Telmessos and was called Makri until 1934, when it was renamed after the pilot Fethi Bey. Look for the 4th-century BC Amyntas Tomb, the Hellenistic theatre and the Knights' fortress. The 1957 earthquake destroyed most of its buildings. Dalaman, by contrast, is a small town you travel through on the way to the coast.

PlaceWorth knowing
Amyntas Tomb, FethiyeA Lycian tomb cut into the cliff above the harbour, from the 4th century BC.
Fethiye MuseumIt shows the civilisations of the region, from the Lycians onwards; it was reported closed in 2023, so check before you go.
Marmaris CastleThe 16th-century fortress built under Suleiman the Magnificent, now a museum (check the hours).
GöcekA yacht and gulet charter base for cruises among the 12 islands of the gulf, 19 km from the airport.
Fethiye to RhodesA foot-passenger ferry links Fethiye with Rhodes from April to October, in about 1 h 45 (check); Marmaris has its own link too.

Marmaris

Marmaris, a marina town between the Gulf of Gökova and the Datça peninsula, is linked by ferry to Rhodes. It is about 90 to 100 km from the airport, roughly 1 h 15 to 1 h 30 by road, and a lively resort in summer.

The Lycian Way and the twelve islands of the Gulf of Fethiye

Conceived by Kate Clow and opened in 1999, the Lycian Way runs from Hisarönü and Ölüdeniz towards the Antalya area (540 to 760 km depending on the source). Walking it in full takes two to three weeks, following red-and-white waymarks, and spring and autumn are the best seasons. The first stage links Fethiye to Kayaköy (about 9 km) and then Ölüdeniz (about 5 km more), but shade is scarce, so avoid the midday heat. An ultramarathon on the trail has started from Ölüdeniz since 2010.

Blue Cruise

Göcek and the twelve islands of the Gulf of Fethiye are favourite anchorages for gulet cruises, the Blue Cruises. From Fethiye the standard trip to the twelve islands lasts about eight hours, with four swimming stops and lunch on board.

Fish, gözleme and Saklıkent trout

Cooking on the Lycian coast mixes fish, meze and the Turkish dishes of the eastern Mediterranean. In Fethiye you buy your fish at the fish market (Balık Pazarı) and have it cooked at one of the restaurants around it. At Saklıkent, trout and gözleme are eaten on terraces by the water.

Where to eat

In Ölüdeniz and Hisarönü menus are often international, aimed at holidaymakers; for a more local table, head for Fethiye, its bazaar and its kebab restaurants. Another Fethiye curiosity is kar şerbeti, a sorbet of snow and grape molasses. In Dalaman itself, the hotels are often the best bet.

Dolmuş, buses and hire cars

Between Fethiye, Ölüdeniz and Kayaköy, dolmuş minibuses run frequently in season until about 23:00 (Fethiye to Ölüdeniz takes about 30 minutes). Muttaş regional buses link Dalaman with Göcek and Fethiye, and with Marmaris. For Dalyan and İztuzu, dolmuşes and river boats are more practical than buses.

Hire cars

A car is useful for Saklıkent, Kayaköy, Xanthos or the quiet coves, and the airport has several rental desks. The mountain roads towards Saklıkent or Faralya are slower than the coast.

When to visit the Dalaman coast?

May and June

One of the best periods: fewer crowds, a sea already warm, and swimming begins in June.

July and August

Hot and dry, around 34 degrees C and sometimes above 35 degrees C: avoid for walking. The sea is around 26 degrees C in August.

September and October

The other ideal window, with the sea still warm, around 24 degrees C, and more pleasant trails.

November to April

Mild and wet, with daytime highs around 16 degrees C and some wind; many tourist businesses close for winter, and spring returns in March.

How many days, what budget and what formalities

Day 1

Beach and lagoon

Ölüdeniz and Belcekız, then a paragliding flight from Babadağ if you want to see the lagoon from above.

Day 2

Gorge and ghost village

The icy Saklıkent Gorge (about 50 km from Fethiye), then Kayaköy and its abandoned village (8 km) late in the day.

Day 3

Dalyan

A day by boat on the river: Lycian tombs, Kaunos and İztuzu Beach.

Day 4

Fethiye and the gulf

The Amyntas Tomb, the fish market, then a gulet outing to the twelve islands.

Recommended length

Five to seven days allow for beach days, a day at Saklıkent Gorge, Kayaköy and a boat day in Dalyan; three or four days are enough for a single resort.

Cost level

Moderate, higher in peak season: seafront accommodation and boat or paragliding excursions weigh most, while local meals, dolmuşes and site entries stay affordable.

Entry rules and common sense

Depending on your nationality, an e-visa or an exemption applies: check the official site evisa.gov.tr and your own government's advice (to be verified). The coast is very much geared to tourists and the usual precautions are enough, along with care on trails in strong heat, on winding roads and when swimming (currents, jellyfish). In mosques, cover shoulders and knees and take your shoes off at the entrance.
