The evening ritual
Zadar's sunset, played by the sea
Alfred Hitchcock is reported to have said in 1964 that Zadar has the most beautiful sunset in the world, even better than Key West. Sources differ on the exact words, but the anecdote has become a tourist slogan. What makes the evening here unique is a pair of contemporary installations on the waterfront of this northern Dalmatian city, both by architect Nikola Bašić.
The Sea Organ
Installed in 2005 at the tip of the Riva, it hides about 35 pipes under white stone steps. The waves push air through them, so the sound changes with the sea and the wind: an instrument played by the sea, free and open day and night.
Greeting to the Sun
Right next to it, 300 multi-layer glass plates form a circle 22 metres across. Solar cells charge by day, and at night the circle runs a light show synchronised with the sounds of the organ.
Waterfront
Where the town gathers at dusk
Arrive 30 to 45 minutes before sunset to find a seat on the steps. The evening is relaxed and local rather than loud, with a few beach bars and terraces in summer, and the light show starts once it is properly dark.

Two thousand years of history
Roman forum, St Donatus and Venetian walls
A Liburnian settlement became a Roman colony after 59 BC, and its street grid and forum, the largest on the eastern Adriatic, are still readable. On the forum stands the church of St Donatus, a round pre-Romanesque building of the 9th century and the best-known landmark of the old town.
From 1409 Zadar belonged to Venice, which turned it into a major fortress. The Venetian defence works were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2017. Austrian, French, Italian and Yugoslav rule followed before Croatia.

Out to the islands
The Kornati and the Zadar archipelago
Day boats leave Zadar for the Kornati National Park, an archipelago reachable only by sea, with full-day trips that usually include swimming stops. Telašćica on Dugi Otok adds cliffs and a salt lake, while ferries from the port serve the nearer islands.
By road, Nin is about 15 km north, an old royal town with salt pans and a muddy beach, and Paklenica National Park, in the Velebit mountains, is about 45 minutes away for hiking and climbing. Krka is roughly an hour away and Plitvice about an hour and a half.
At the table
Adriatic fish and maraschino
Cooking here is Dalmatian: Adriatic fish and seafood, Pag cheese, vegetable risotto and chard with potatoes. The town's own drink is maraschino, a cherry liqueur made from Marasca cherries and produced in Zadar since the 16th century.
