Samos was once described as a kind of "Silicon Valley of antiquity," a place that produced an extraordinary list of mathematicians, astronomers, philosophers and architects, including the tyrant Polycrates's court poets Anacreon and Ibycus. The nearby harbour town of Pythagorio takes its modern name from the island's most famous son, the mathematician Pythagoras, and the island also claims the philosopher Epicurus and the astronomer Aristarchus, who worked out that the Earth orbits the Sun centuries before Copernicus. Under Ottoman rule Samos became a semi-autonomous principality governed by a Greek Christian prince, and it wasn't fully joined to Greece until 1913. Vathy took over as island capital from Chora in 1854 and grew wealthy on the tobacco trade; officially renamed Samos Town in 1958, locals and ferry timetables alike still simply call it Vathy.

Samos Muscat, a 2,500-year-old wine tradition

Pythagoreion and the Heraion, a joint UNESCO World Heritage Site

Pythagoreion is an ancient fortified town built over the island's historic capital, filled with Roman thermal baths, a theatre, partially preserved 4th-century-BC city walls and the remnants of a vast ancient harbour that was once a major trade hub. Just outside town, the Tunnel of Eupalinos is a remarkable 6th-century-BC engineering feat — a roughly 1-km-long aqueduct tunnel dug from both ends simultaneously, one of the first known structures built this way. Together with the nearby Heraion, one of the largest ancient temples ever dedicated to the goddess Hera, Pythagoreion was inscribed as a joint UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992 — a rare distinction for a single island to hold two listings under one entry.

Vathy's hillside quarter and Samos's green interior

Vathy lines the steep northeastern shore of a deep bay, its neoclassical waterfront buildings a reminder of the town's former prosperity, while Ano Vathy — the older hillside quarter above — is largely missed by day-tripping cruise visitors, its cobbled lanes and traditional red-roofed houses predating mass tourism entirely. Pythagoras Square, a short walk from the Archaeological Museum and the old town, remains the town's liveliest gathering spot. Thanks to abundant springs and small rivers, Samos is often called one of the greenest islands in the Aegean, and the hillside villages of Manolates and Vourliotes — reached via oak and chestnut forests on Mount Kerkis — offer a striking contrast to the drier landscapes of the nearby Cyclades.

Beyond its famous Muscat, Samos has grown some of Greece's purest olive oil since antiquity, and its cuisine blends Greek tradition with Asia Minor influences carried across the narrow strait from the Turkish coast. The Archaeological Museum of Samos in Vathy houses treasures unearthed at the Heraion and across the island, including the imposing Kouros of Samos statue, while evening life shifts toward Pythagorio, where bars and tavernas stay busy well into the night along the marina.

Three ports for exploring the North Aegean

Samos Airport sits close to Pythagorio on the island's south coast, about 25 minutes by car from Vathy, which means Pythagorio is usually the first stop for arriving visitors. The island is served by three ports: Vathy, the main one, connected to Piraeus and onward to islands including Mykonos, Syros, Patmos and Rhodes; Karlovasi, geared toward other North Aegean islands and the Cyclades; and Pythagorio, the departure point for boats to the Dodecanese and, in season, excursions across to Kuşadası in Turkey. A rental car gives the most freedom to combine Vathy's sights with the beaches and mountain villages scattered around the island, though local bus routes also connect the main towns.
