Over 60 beaches on an island under 50 km²
Skiathos is the smallest of the main Sporades islands, off the coast of Magnesia in the northern Aegean. The municipality covers about 49.9 km² and had 5,802 residents at the 2021 census (Wikipedia). It makes up for its size with more than sixty beaches, mostly sandy, backed by pine forests that sometimes reach the shoreline. Most of the island's life gathers in Skiathos Town (Chora) on the south-east coast.
Inhabited since antiquity, the island fell under Venetian rule in 1207 with the Ghisi brothers, who built the Bourtzi fortress against pirates. In the 14th century the population took refuge in Kastro, on a rock in the north, then moved back to the town site in the 1830s. Skiathos is also the home of the writer Alexandros Papadiamantis (1851-1911), several of whose short stories are set on the island.

The Bourtzi peninsula separates the old harbour from the new one and is reached on foot from the quay. Only a few traces remain of the 1207 Venetian fortress, set in a pine-planted park where an open-air theatre stages summer performances. Around it, pedestrian Papadiamantis Street crosses the centre between tavernas, jewellers and boutiques, and the old-harbour bars come alive in the evening.
The town takes half a day on foot; start on the waterfront, then climb the lanes for views over both harbours.

Skiathos is not a museum island: people come for the sea, and each of these sights takes only a few hours. There is no hospital on the island, only medical centres, and serious cases go to Volos.
Beaches
Koukounaries, Lalaria, Banana and the northern coves
The south is the side of calm, sandy beaches; the north has wilder, windier ones. Koukounaries, backed by pines and a lagoon, is the most famous, and neighbouring Big and Small Banana draw a young crowd. Asselinos is large and little developed, while Kanapitsa offers water sports around a clear cove.
Lalaria. A beach of large white stones and clear water with a rock arch, reachable only by boat; trips leave from the old harbour, often as part of an island tour. Northern beaches can be hit by wind, so check the forecast before choosing.
Food and drink
Souvlaki, grilled fish and ouzo
Eating on Skiathos is much like the other Greek islands: souvlaki and grills from stalls in town, fish and seafood in the waterfront tavernas, slow-cooked dishes in village restaurants. Beach tavernas serve similar food at similar prices from one beach to the next.
To drink. Beer and ouzo are the usual drinks; olive oil, honey and the island's wine make good souvenirs. Tap water is not considered drinkable, so buy bottled water, which is cheap.
Nightlife. Cocktail bars on the old harbour, with cushions on the steps, and cafes along Papadiamantis Street and Three Hierarchs Square set the evening mood; clubs are mostly north-east of the port. It is the liveliest of the Sporades, but quiet outside summer.

Caiques from the old harbour offer island tours with swimming stops, often combined with Lalaria and the sea caves of the north coast. Skopelos and Alonissos are classic excursions by ferry or hydrofoil, and Pelion can be reached from Volos. Sea links are less frequent outside the high season, so check timetables before planning.

Getting around
Buses, taxis, scooters and ferries
A single bus line runs along the south coast from the port to Koukounaries; you pay the conductor in cash, and the bus station is near the port. Taxis are easy to find at the harbour. Many visitors rent a scooter or small vehicle: roads in the south are paved but interior roads are often dirt tracks; helmets are compulsory and you should check brakes, tyres and insurance. Petrol stations are few, so fill up before a day out.
Ferries. Ferries serve Volos and Agios Konstantinos all year, and Thessaloniki in season; hydrofoils link Skopelos and Alonissos. Cruise ships dock in the centre of the town.

Mid-range to expensive in summer
Skiathos is a mid-range destination outside the season and pricier in July and August, especially near the famous beaches. A souvlaki or simple taverna meal stays moderate, while a fish dinner or beach restaurant adds up quickly; scooter rental is about ten to fifteen euros a day according to Wikivoyage, old figures worth checking.
Saving money. Aim for May-June or September, stay away from the busiest beaches, use the south-coast bus and make the most of free sights: Bourtzi park, the town lanes and most beaches.
