Landmarks
The Mole, the Alps from the hills, Piazza San Carlo and its arcades
Turin is visited for its royal, Baroque and industrial heritage, between the Alps and the Po. Four places are illustrated below; the palaces and churches are described at the end of the section.
Turin and the Alps
Turin sits against the Alps: on a clear day the snow-capped range can be seen from the heights of the city, behind the spire of the Mole. Wikivoyage (EN) stresses that the climate is continental, with frequent snow in winter. The hills on the right bank of the Po give the best viewpoints.

The Mole Antonelliana
The city's symbol, the Mole was completed in 1888; it was first meant as a synagogue but its purpose changed, according to Wikivoyage (EN). At 167.5 m it is the tallest masonry structure in Europe according to the same source. A lift rises to the dome, and the building houses the National Cinema Museum.

Piazza San Carlo
Often called Turin's drawing room, this Baroque square, framed by uniform façades and arcades, lies in the heart of the pedestrian district. It illustrates the planned city of the Savoys, with its long straight axes. Historic cafés, arcades and shops surround it.

The Mole at night
After dark the spire of the Mole is lit and can be seen above the city. Turin is known for its kilometres of arcades, which let you stroll sheltered from the rain; in the evening the cafés and bars of the centre and of San Salvario come alive.

Palaces, cathedral and Savoy residences
Around Piazza Castello stand the Palazzo Madama and the Royal Palace. The Cathedral of St John the Baptist houses the Holy Shroud, according to Wikipedia (FR). The church of the Gran Madre di Dio, built from 1818 to 1831 on the model of the Pantheon in Rome according to Wikivoyage (DE), overlooks the bank of the Po; the Basilica of Superga, on the hill, is reached by a rack railway according to Wikivoyage (EN). The Venaria Reale is the great royal residence nearby.
Museums and culture
Egypt, cinema, old masters and cars
The Egyptian Museum
The Museo Egizio is regarded as the oldest museum in the world devoted to ancient Egypt, and the second in importance after Cairo for the value of its finds, according to Wikipedia (ES). Wikivoyage (EN) mentions in particular the intact tomb of Kha and Merit. We do not quote admission prices.
Cinema at the Mole
The National Cinema Museum occupies the interior of the Mole over several levels, according to Wikivoyage (EN), and can be combined with the lift ride up to the dome.
Other collections
The Galleria Sabauda, housed in a royal palace, presents old master art from Piedmont and Europe, according to Wikipedia (ES). Turin, a car-industry city, also has an automobile museum. A tourist pass exists (Torino + Piemonte Card), but Wikivoyage (EN) notes that it is hard to break even: compare before buying.
Food and drink
Bicerin, gianduiotto, grissini and aperitivo
Chocolate and historic cafés
Wikivoyage (EN) lists torrone, bicerin, grissini and gianduiotto among Turin's traditional products. Bicerin is a hot drink of coffee, chocolate and cream, served in the historic cafés of the centre.
Piedmontese cooking
Piedmontese cooking relies on agnolotti, bagna cauda and the region's wines such as Barolo. In the trattorias of the centre the food is hearty: ask for the dish of the day. We do not name specific places.
Aperitivo and districts
Turin has its own aperitivo tradition, with buffets served alongside a drink, notably in cafés and bars of the centre and near the Po. The streets around Porta Nuova and Piazza Vittorio are lively in the evening.
Getting around
Walking, trams, metro and trains
A flat, walkable centre
The centre is flat and largely walkable; Via Garibaldi is a pedestrian street about a kilometre long, according to Wikivoyage (DE). The arcades give shelter from rain and sun.
Trams, buses and metro
Trams, buses and a metro line serve the city; Porta Nuova station is on the metro, with many buses outside, according to Wikivoyage (EN). Tickets are sold at machines or online.
Trains and mountains
Porta Nuova is the station for international and long-distance trains: Milan in 50 minutes, Aosta in 90 minutes, Genoa in 90 minutes, according to Wikivoyage (EN). The Alps of the Susa Valley suit a day trip by train or car.
Budget and precautions
A moderate budget, to adjust by season
