Airport and getting into town
An airport about ten kilometres out, mostly used by low-cost airlines
Verona Villafranca Valerio Catullo (VRN)
Valerio Catullo airport, also known as Verona Villafranca, is about 12 km from the city according to Wikivoyage (EN) and about 10 km south-west of the centre according to Wikivoyage (DE); the sources differ slightly. It mostly hosts budget flights and some domestic routes, according to Wikivoyage (EN). A shuttle and buses link the airport to Porta Nuova station; timetables and fares change, so check them before you travel.
Distances and times are approximate, from Wikivoyage (EN, DE) and Wikipedia (FR, EN); timetables and fares change, so check them before you travel. We do not quote transport fares.
Verona is the largest city in the Veneto, with about 255,000 inhabitants according to Wikipedia (EN), and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since November 2000 for its urban structure and architecture. It is known for its Arena and for Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Wikivoyage (EN) considers that, although close to Venice, Verona is more relaxed: there are many tourists, but fewer per square metre. Venice airport (VCE) is an alternative to watch.
Landmarks
Arena, Piazza delle Erbe, Ponte Pietra and Castelvecchio
The city of Roman, medieval and Scaliger origins is easy to explore on foot, along the Adige. Five views are illustrated below; Juliet's house and the churches are described at the end of the section.
The Arena
The Arena, built in the 1st century AD, is an enormous elliptical amphitheatre, the third-largest amphitheatre to survive from antiquity according to Wikivoyage (EN). Its outer wall fell in the earthquake of 1117, except for a fragment, but the interior is still in use: opera is staged there. It closes early on performance evenings.

Piazza delle Erbe and the Lamberti Tower
Piazza delle Erbe, the Roman forum according to Wikivoyage (EN), has remained the focal point of city life, with its coloured façades, market and fountain. The Lamberti Tower, completed in 1463, is the tallest of Verona's towers; you climb 238 steps or take the lift for the view, according to the same source.

The Ponte Pietra
This stone bridge crosses the Adige at the foot of the hill. From the bank you see it reflected in the water, especially at sunset. Behind it is Castel San Pietro, from which the view over Verona is spectacular according to Wikivoyage (EN); you climb on foot or take the funicular.

Castelvecchio
A former fortress of the Scaligers, the family that ruled Verona in the Middle Ages and whose emblem is a ladder, scala in Italian, according to Wikivoyage (EN), Castelvecchio opens onto the crenellated bridge across the Adige. It houses a museum; from the bank, the brick silhouette is especially beautiful at twilight.

The Adige and its bridges
The Adige loops around the old centre and is crossed by several stone bridges. Seen from above, the city is a patchwork of red-tiled roofs cut by the river's green water, with the Ponte Pietra and the pedestrian streets of the left bank.

Juliet, San Zeno and the cathedral
Juliet's house is a much-visited romantic shrine, but Wikivoyage (EN) points out that its balcony was added in 1936 to attract tourists and that the house has little to offer compared with other treasures of the city: worth seeing for the atmosphere, but do not expect too much. The churches of San Zeno and Sant'Anastasia and the cathedral are among the main sights according to the same source.
Museums and culture
Castelvecchio, Arena, opera and modern art
The Castelvecchio museum
The museum housed in the Scaliger fortress is one of the city's main cultural visits according to Wikivoyage (EN); you can also climb on the ramparts. We do not quote prices.
Opera at the Arena
The Arena hosts performances by top singers, according to Wikivoyage (EN); on those evenings the whole city, not just the Arena, is booked solid, for hotels and restaurants alike. Book very early if you come for a performance.
Museums and galleries
The Lamberti Tower ticket is linked to a modern art gallery, according to Wikivoyage (EN). A Verona Card exists to bundle several visits: compare it with your individual tickets before buying.
Food and drink
Pastissada, bollito misto, local pasta and Amarone
A distinctive Veneto cuisine
Wikivoyage (EN) says Veronese people are keen eaters of horse meat: pastissada de caval is a dish of braised horse. Among other dishes, look for local pasta such as bigoli, casoncelli and pizzocheri, casoela (a pork casserole) and bollito misto served with mostarda.
Valpolicella wines
The Valpolicella region, right next to Verona, is famous for Amarone, Recioto and Valpolicella wines, according to Wikivoyage (EN). A cellar visit is a classic excursion by car or on an organised tour.
Aperitif and cicchetti
Verona shares with Venice the tradition of cicchetti, small bites served with a drink, notably in the little bars of the centre at aperitif time. We do not name specific places.
Getting around
On foot in the centre, bus and train
A compact, pedestrian centre
The old town is largely pedestrian and best seen on foot; Porta Nuova station is linked to the Arena (Piazza Bra) by city buses, according to Wikivoyage (EN). Strolling through the medieval centre in the evening, once the day-trippers have left, is one of the city's pleasures.
Buses and tickets
Bus tickets are sold at machines, online or at tobacconists; the same source notes that buying on board costs a surcharge. We do not quote fares.
Trains and excursions
Vicenza, Padua, Mantua and Venice are easy day trips by train, according to Wikivoyage (EN); Lake Garda can also be reached in a day, as can Valpolicella, by car.
Budget and precautions
A mid-range budget, to adjust by season and performances
Price level
We do not quote figures, because we could not cross-check them against two independent open sources. Admission, transport and accommodation rates change every year.
Performance season
On opera nights at the Arena the city is full, according to Wikivoyage (EN): book well ahead or pick another period. Outside events, the city is calmer.

SniperAir tracks prices to VRN and compares them with the route's history, but it does not sell or book tickets. Italy is in the Schengen area: check entry rules for your nationality. As in any tourist city, watch your belongings in crowds.
