Landmarks
Old Town, cathedral and Gediminas Hill
The Old Town is explored on foot, along lanes that rise and fall between courtyards and churches. The six places below come with photos; others are described further down in text only.
Vilnius Old Town
Seen from above, Vilnius Old Town is a patchwork of red-tiled roofs dotted with bell towers. Listed by UNESCO in 1994, it is one of the largest old towns in Europe and the largest baroque city north of the Alps according to Wikipedia (EN). The style found here, Vilnian Baroque, is one of its trademarks, with strong Italian influence.

Vilnius University
The university, the oldest in the Baltic states, is organised around a series of courtyards. The Great Courtyard, with St John's Church and its tall bell tower, is the best known; the university is on Pilies Street, in the heart of the Old Town according to Wikivoyage (EN). Access to the courtyards is usually by ticket; check the opening hours on the official site.

St Anne's Church
Small and elegant, St Anne's Church is a gem of flamboyant Gothic, built by about 1500 and little altered since according to Wikivoyage (EN). A legend says Napoleon wanted to carry it to Paris. It stands by the bridge entrance to the Užupis district.

Gediminas Hill and tower
The red-brick tower on Gediminas Hill is the last remnant of the Upper Castle of a medieval complex of three castles according to Wikivoyage (EN). You can walk up or take a funicular. The view over the Old Town, the River Neris and the modern districts is one of the most popular in the city.

The cathedral and its belfry
Vilnius's neoclassical cathedral stands on Cathedral Square, beside a slender detached belfry. The square is the historic heart of the city and a meeting place for locals according to Wikivoyage (EN). Nearby are the Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania, a modern reconstruction according to Wikivoyage (EN), and the arsenal.

A different face: the banks of the Neris
West of the Old Town, the River Neris makes a bend around which the business district has grown, with its glass skyscrapers. At dusk, the lit riverbanks contrast with the tiled roofs of the old centre.

Other places worth noting include the Gate of Dawn (Aušros Vartai), a pilgrimage site in the heart of the city, Town Hall Square, the Hill of Three Crosses, the Užupis district with its constitution displayed on a wall, and the Bernardine monastery. Trakai Castle, on an island in a lake, is about 30 km to the west according to Wikivoyage (EN).

Specialities to try
Lithuanian cooking is hearty and centred on the potato. Cepelinai are large potato dumplings stuffed with meat and served with sour cream, bulviniai blynai are potato pancakes, and šaltibarščiai is a cold beetroot and kefir soup of a bright pink colour, much enjoyed in summer. The kibinas, a small pastry filled with meat or vegetables, and dark bread complete the picture.
Markets and districts
The market hall Halės turgus, built in 1906 according to Wikivoyage (EN) and looking like a railway terminus, is the main market, with fresh-produce stalls and a few small eateries. In the Old Town, Pilies Street and the neighbouring lanes are lined with cafés and restaurants; the Užupis district, across the River Vilnia, has a more bohemian atmosphere.
Drinks
Beer is widespread; local drinks include midus, a honey liqueur according to Wikivoyage (EN), and gira, a fermented bread-based drink. No brand is named here.

Precautions and neighbourhood
Lithuania has been a member of the European Union and of NATO since 2004.
