An airport about 12 km out, linked to the centre by train

KRK

Kraków John Paul II (KRK)

Kraków Airport sits in Balice, around 12 km west of the centre according to Wikivoyage (EN, ES, FR); Wikivoyage (DE) says 11 km. LOT flies here, along with low-cost carriers such as Ryanair and Wizz Air. A train links the terminal to Kraków Główny station in about 20 minutes, every 30 minutes or so during the day, says Wikivoyage (EN). City buses and ride-hailing apps fill the gaps. Winter fog sometimes causes delays and diversions, and Katowice, about 100 km away, is the usual fallback airport.

Distances and times are approximate, from Wikivoyage (EN, DE, ES, FR); schedules change, so check them before you travel. We do not quote fares.

Kraków lies on the Vistula in southern Poland and has roughly 800,000 inhabitants (Wikivoyage EN, Wikipedia DE). It was the Polish capital until the late 16th century. The core is compact enough to cover on foot. Direct trains from Warsaw take about 2 h 40 min per Wikivoyage (EN), and Zakopane, below the Tatras, is about 2 h 20 min by bus.

Wawel, the Main Square, the Cloth Hall and the Vistula banks

Kraków's historic centre was on the very first UNESCO World Heritage list, in 1978, according to Wikipedia (EN, FR). The city avoided major destruction after the medieval Tatar raid, so Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque buildings sit side by side. The places below are illustrated; Kazimierz and the Planty park are covered at the end of the section.

Wawel Hill and the Royal Castle

Wawel became the seat of the Piast monarchs in 1038, according to Wikipedia (EN) and Wikivoyage (EN). The castle, its courtyards and the cathedral, where most Polish kings are buried (Wikipedia DE), crown the hill. The Royal Chambers hold a major collection of 16th-century Flemish tapestries, says Wikipedia (EN). Legend has it that a dragon lived beneath the hill until Prince Krak, the city's mythical founder, slew it.

Wawel's green domes in spring

In spring, cherry blossom frames the red roofs and green-domed towers of the Wawel complex. Together with the castle and its walls, the cathedral forms the former royal residence that Wikipedia (DE) describes as the burial place of many figures from Polish history.

The Main Square and St. Mary's Basilica

The Main Market Square (Rynek Główny) is one of the largest medieval squares in Europe, says Wikivoyage (DE). A trumpeter plays a signal from the tower of St. Mary's Basilica every hour, the two uneven brick towers being the square's landmark (Wikivoyage DE). The medieval cellars below the square have been restored and parts are open to visitors (Wikivoyage DE).

The Cloth Hall (Sukiennice)

In the middle of the square, the Cloth Hall dates from the 13th century and was rebuilt in Renaissance style in 1550, according to Wikivoyage (DE). A National Museum gallery occupies the upper floor, says Wikivoyage (ES). Souvenir and craft stalls under the arcades continue the building's long role as a marketplace.

The Vistula below Wawel

The riverbanks below the hill are made for walking, cycling or a boat trip. Wikivoyage (EN) recommends strolling the well-kept banks next to the castle. From here the hill and its brick ramparts look quite different, with excursion boats moored below.

Kazimierz, the Planty and beyond

Kazimierz, the former Jewish quarter founded by King Casimir the Great (Wikivoyage EN), keeps its old synagogue and lively squares. The Planty park rings the old town from St. Florian's Gate to Wawel and is a pleasant walk; St. Florian's Gate and the Barbican belong to the former city walls. Outside the centre, the Wieliczka Salt Mine has been on the UNESCO list since 1978 (Wikipedia DE), and Nowa Huta is a showcase of socialist town planning (Wikivoyage EN, DE).

Dozens of museums, from Leonardo to Schindler's factory

A rich museum scene

Kraków has about 82 museums and museum branches as of 2023, says Wikipedia (EN). The National Museum, founded in 1879, holds the country's largest body of artworks according to the same source. The Museum of Kraków runs many sites, among them the Old Synagogue, Oskar Schindler's Enamel Factory, stretches of the walls and the Barbican (Wikivoyage ES).

The Lady with an Ermine

Leonardo da Vinci's portrait known as the Lady with an Ermine is displayed in the Czartoryski Museum, just inside the old town, according to Wikivoyage (ES). The Wawel interiors add weapons, applied art and tapestries (Wikipedia EN).

Memory and recent history

Schindler's factory and Podgórze, where the ghetto stood under German occupation, recall the fate of Kraków's Jewish community (Wikivoyage DE, ES). Auschwitz, about two hours away by train per Wikivoyage (EN), needs its own day and the respect the place demands. We do not quote fares: they change, as do opening days and hours.

Obwarzanek, zapiekanka, pierogi and milk bars

Street food

The obwarzanek, a ring of dough halfway between a bagel and a pretzel, is sold everywhere, says Wikivoyage (EN). The zapiekanka, a toasted open baguette with mushrooms and cheese, is best at Plac Nowy (the Okrąglak) in Kazimierz, per the same source. Maczanka, slow-cooked shredded pork in a bun, is another local dish.

Traditional Polish cooking

Pierogi, dumplings filled with potato, cheese, meat, cabbage or mushrooms, and gołąbki, stuffed cabbage leaves, are among the typical dishes listed by Wikivoyage (FR). Milk bars (bar mleczny), canteens from the communist era, serve home-style food very cheaply according to Wikivoyage (EN, DE).

Drinks and nights out

Bars, pubs and cafes are one of Kraków's big draws, with more than 300 in the old town alone (Wikivoyage EN). The tatanka, apple juice with bison-grass vodka, is a local mix. Żywiec and Okocim beers and Polish vodkas are everywhere (Wikivoyage DE). Smoked mountain cheese such as oscypek comes from the Tatras and is sold mainly from late April to October (Wikivoyage EN).

On foot in the centre, tram and bus beyond, ride-hailing to the airport

On foot

The historic core is compact and easily covered on foot; much of the old town is pedestrian-only, says Wikivoyage (EN). Bring sturdy shoes for the cobbles and waterproof soles in winter.

Tram and bus

The municipal tram and bus network (MPK) is rated excellent by Wikivoyage (EN). Tickets are sold at machines, kiosks or in an app and are validated on first boarding. For the airport bus you need an agglomeration ticket (zones I and II), while the train has its own fare.

Taxi, ride-hailing and car

Uber and Bolt operate in Kraków and avoid the haggling over regular taxi fares, say Wikivoyage (EN, DE). Driving in the centre is discouraged: parking is scarce, some zones are limited to residents and traffic is heavy.

A major tourist city that is still good value, but check prices yourself

Price level

Wikivoyage (DE) calls food and restaurants cheap in Kraków, and Wikivoyage (EN) mentions milk bars where a big lunch is very inexpensive. We give no figures because we could not cross-check them on two independent open sources; prices vary with the season and the neighbourhood.

Busy periods

Kraków is Poland's most popular tourist destination, says Wikivoyage (EN). Summer, the Christmas markets and weekends are the busiest times, so book early.

Flying and precautions

SniperAir tracks prices to KRK and compares them with the route's history, but it does not sell or book tickets. Check entry requirements for Poland for your nationality with the official authorities. In winter air quality can drop because of coal heating, notes Wikivoyage (EN); sensitive travellers may want to check conditions before leaving.

Hot summers, cold snowy winters: May to September for mild weather

Spring (March to May)

Cherry trees bloom around Wawel and terraces reopen; March stays cool. A good time for walking and museums.

Summer (June to August)

Hot and sometimes humid, with average highs of about 25 °C per Wikivoyage (EN); days above 30 °C are increasingly common according to Wikipedia (EN). The liveliest months.

Autumn (September to November)

Soft light, colour in the Planty park and thinner crowds. It turns chilly by November.

Winter (December to February)

Kraków is often under snow; average lows are about -3 to -4 °C per Wikivoyage (EN) and the January mean about -2 °C per Wikipedia (DE). The Main Square is lit for the holidays, but fog can disrupt flights.

Kraków has a humid continental climate bordering on oceanic, with four distinct seasons, according to Wikipedia (EN, DE). We give no detailed monthly averages because sources differ depending on the reference period.
