One airport, linked to the center by trolleybus, metro and express train

PRG

Prague Airport

The gateway to the Czech capital, a short ride from the center. Since 2024, trolleybus 59 takes about 15 minutes to reach Nádraží Veleslavín station on metro line A, and the Airport Express runs to the main railway station in roughly 40 to 45 minutes.

A medieval capital that came through intact, with beer cheaper than in Western Europe

A city spared by the war

Prague escaped the large-scale destruction suffered by many European cities in the Second World War. It keeps a Gothic, Baroque and Art Nouveau ensemble that is rare on the continent, and its historic center has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1992. Four medieval towns, the Old Town, Malá Strana, the New Town and Hradčany, were merged in 1784 to form the city we know today.

Charles Bridge and the castle

Work on Charles Bridge began in 1357. The stone structure has 16 arches, is 516 meters long and carries 30 Baroque statues, now replaced by copies. Crossing it is free. On the far bank, Prague Castle dominates the skyline: the grounds are free to enter, while the interiors bring together St Vitus Cathedral, the Old Royal Palace, St George's Basilica and Golden Lane. Arriving at opening time is the classic way to beat the crowds.

The astronomical clock

On Old Town Square, the Old Town Hall holds an astronomical clock dating from 1410, described as the oldest still working in the world. Its animation plays every hour until 21:00.

From Charles IV to the Velvet Revolution

Capital of Bohemia, of the Holy Roman Empire and of Czechoslovakia

Prague was the seat of the Kingdom of Bohemia and, under Charles IV, of the Holy Roman Empire. In 1348 he founded the New Town and Charles University. The Defenestration of Prague in 1618 helped trigger the Thirty Years' War. The city became the capital of Czechoslovakia in 1918, endured occupation from 1939 to 1945 and the Warsaw Pact invasion of 1968, and was at the heart of the Velvet Revolution of 1989.

Districts, beer and Bohemian cooking

The districts

The Old Town is the medieval merchants' center. Malá Strana, below the castle, is the Baroque quarter. The New Town is the 1348 extension, Hradčany is the castle district, and Josefov, the former Jewish quarter, is home to the Jewish Museum, which links several synagogues and the Old Jewish Cemetery.

Beer and the table

Roast pork with dumplings and sauerkraut, svíčková (marinated sirloin in a cream sauce with cranberries) and goulash are the classics of Czech cooking. A half-liter in a local pub costs far less than in Western Europe, and less again than in tourist restaurants, so wandering a few streets away from the main squares pays off. Trdelník, sold as street food, is widely described as more of a tourist tradition than a local one.

Getting around

The center is best explored on foot. For the rest, the PID public transport network combines metro, tram and bus, with tickets valid for 30 minutes, 90 minutes, 24 hours or 72 hours.
