Arctic Sweden by the sea
Planning a Luleå winter trip
A Luleå winter trip takes you to the capital of Norrbotten, Sweden's northernmost county, at the head of the Gulf of Bothnia. The city sits about 900 km north of Stockholm and about 110 km south of the Arctic Circle. In winter its archipelago, which spreads across hundreds of islands and is often described as the largest brackish-water archipelago in the world, freezes solid, and the sea becomes a playground of skating tracks and ploughed roads. It is arctic Sweden without the price tag of upper Lapland.

Luleå Airport
Kallax, Sweden's fifth-largest airport
Luleå Airport (Kallax)
Sweden's fifth-largest airport, about 5 to 7 km south of the centre, handles about 1.2 million passengers a year. From Stockholm Arlanda the flight takes about 1 hour 10 to 1 hour 20; the sleeper train takes 13 to 15 hours depending on the source, so flying is the fastest option.
Road, rail and local buses
Local buses 4 and 104 serve the airport (Wikivoyage); a taxi is also easy on this short trip. The E4 runs up from southern Sweden and Finland, and the E10 heads towards Norway. The Ore Railway (Malmbanan) continues to Narvik, and the train is a good way to combine Luleå with Kiruna.
The frozen sea
Skate, kicksled and drive on the Baltic
Isbanan, the city ice track
Every winter Luleå clears a track of about 10 km on the frozen sea between Norra Hamn and Södra Hamn. Its length varies from year to year, and it usually opens from late December into spring. Skate, kicksled, walk or jog along it, then stop at one of the rest areas with grills. There are three access points.
Ice roads to the islands
About 30 km of ploughed ice roads link the mainland to islands such as Hindersön, Storbrändön, Långön, Sandön, Kallaxön, Bergön and Junkön, opening up the archipelago in a way that is impossible in summer.
Gammelstad Church Town
A UNESCO village of red wooden cottages
Sunday lodgings for faraway worshippers
About 10 km from today's center, Gammelstad Church Town has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996. More than 400 small wooden church cottages cluster around the 15th-century Nederluleå Church, the only stone building in the district. They gave overnight shelter to worshippers who travelled long distances for Sunday and feast-day services. When land uplift made the harbor too shallow, the town moved to its present site in 1649, so Gammelstad escaped 19th-century industrialization. It is still a living community, with markets and midsummer gatherings.

A city that moved
Luleå received its royal charter from Gustavus Adolphus in 1621 and moved its site in 1649 when land uplift left the harbour too shallow. It became the county seat in 1856 and the neo-Gothic Luleå Cathedral, completed in 1893, rises 67 metres.
Archipelago and technology
Hundreds of islands and a city of engineers
The archipelago
In front of the city, hundreds of islands spread across the brackish water of the Gulf of Bothnia, often described as the largest brackish-water archipelago in the world. In summer it is for sun and boat trips; in winter you reach it on foot, on skis or by the ice roads.
Midnight sun and northern lights
The northern lights are visible from September to March, and the midnight sun lights the summer nights.
Technology
The first GSM call was made here in 1989, and Facebook opened a data centre in the early 2010s, drawn by the cold air and hydropower.
Winter activities
On the ice, in the snow, under the aurora
| Type of outing | What you can do around Luleå |
