Visby medieval town: a walled Hanseatic port in the Baltic

Towers of the medieval town wall of Visby

Visby is the only city on Gotland, Sweden's largest island, out in the middle of the Baltic Sea. This Visby medieval town has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995, listed as the Hanseatic Town of Visby, and together with Tallinn it is one of only two towns in northern Europe whose medieval street plan has been fully preserved. Swedes call it the city of roses and ruins, and it is one of the sunniest places in the country, with just over 2,000 hours of sunshine a year.

The Ringmuren

The town wall, the Ringmuren, still wraps around the old town for roughly three and a half kilometers, and dozens of its towers are still standing. Its oldest building, the Powder Tower (Kruttornet), dates from the 12th century.

Visby Airport

The island's airport lies about 5 km from the center of Visby.

By ferry

Ferries sail to Visby from Nynäshamn, south of Stockholm, and from Oskarshamn, with a crossing of roughly three to four hours depending on the source. A commuter train runs from Stockholm to the Nynäshamn terminal. Bicycles and pets travel on board if you book ahead, and sailings fill up early around midsummer, Almedalen Week and Medieval Week.

From Hanseatic boom to Danish conquest

WhenWhat happened in Visby
12th to 14th centuryVisby thrives as a Hanseatic trading center
1225St Mary's Cathedral is consecrated
1361Danish king Valdemar IV conquers Gotland; about 1,800 Gotlanders die in the battle outside the walls
1525The town is destroyed by forces from Lübeck
1995Visby is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List

After the Danish conquest, raids by the Victual Brothers and the Teutonic Knights pushed the town into decline. That long sleep is why so much survived. Seventeen medieval churches once stood inside the walls, and St Mary's Cathedral is the only one still fully intact. The others are atmospheric ruins: look for St Catherine's, Drotten, and St Nicholas, built around 1230 for the Dominicans, where a Gothic choir and a rose window remain.

Cobbled lanes and 8,000 years of island history

Wander first, then step into the museum

The best way to see Visby is on foot, following the cobbled lanes between the ruins and the wall. Then head to the Gotlands Museum (Fornsalen), which covers about 8,000 years of history on five floors, including Viking coins and picture stones from the 5th to the 11th centuries. It is open daily from 9 am to 5 pm, according to the museum.

Sweden's largest historical event, every August

Each August, Medieval Week (Medeltidsveckan) turns Visby into a costumed medieval town, with about 800 programme items spread over some 40 stages. It is billed as the largest historical event in Sweden. Check the official site for this year's dates and tickets, and book your ferry and room early.

Almedalen Week

In the first week of July, Visby hosts Almedalen Week, a major forum for Swedish politics that also fills the town.

Fårö, caves and the island by bike

Fårö

In the far north of Gotland, a free car ferry crosses from Fårösund to Fårö in about 6 minutes, every 15 minutes during summer days. The island is famous for its rauks, limestone sea stacks: Digerhuvud has the largest stack area in Sweden, and Langhammars is another highlight. Ingmar Bergman lived and died on Fårö and shot Persona and Shame here.

Closer to Visby

The Lummelunda cave is about 15 km north-east of town, the Kneippbyn amusement park about 5 km south, and the Bunge open-air museum about 55 km away. Cycling is the natural way to explore the island.

Saffron pancake and Gotland lamb

The island's signature dessert is saffranspannkaka, a saffron and almond rice pudding served with dewberry jam; saffron is even farmed on Gotland. Look out too for Gotland lamb, duck and smoked fish. In the old town, Frimis Krog grills whole Gotland lamb.
