Only in Malmö
A twisting tower, a bridge to Denmark and a sauna over the sea
The Turning Torso
Designed by Santiago Calatrava and completed in 2005, the Turning Torso rises 190 meters and twists 90 degrees from base to top, making it Europe's second-tallest residential tower. It has no public viewing deck, so the best views are from the waterfront in the Västra Hamnen district, where it towers over the neighborhood built for the 2001 housing exposition.
The Öresund Bridge
Opened on 1 July 2000, the fixed link joins Malmö to Copenhagen with a 7.8 km bridge continuing onto an artificial island and a tunnel, 15.9 km in all. It is Sweden's only direct fixed connection to the European continent. Öresundståg trains leave about every 20 minutes in the daytime.
Ribersborgs Kallbadhus
Built in 1898 on timber piles at the end of a wooden pier, this cold-water bathhouse has six saunas. Locals alternate heat with a plunge into the Øresund, facing Ribersborg beach, a long sandy stretch nicknamed the Copacabana of Scandinavia.
History
A former Danish city that became Swedish in 1658
From Malmöhus to sustainable design
Malmö belonged to Denmark for centuries and became Swedish with the Treaty of Roskilde in 1658. Its Renaissance fortress, Malmöhus Castle, now houses the city museum, an aquarium and a technology and maritime museum. After the Kockums shipyard closed in 1986 the city rebuilt itself as a laboratory of sustainable urbanism, and today almost half of its residents have a foreign background. It is also the only non-capital city to have hosted Eurovision three times, in 1992, 2013 and 2024.

On the ground
Falafel in Möllevången, Lilla Torg and bike lanes
Möllevången, a lively, alternative neighborhood, is the capital of Malmö's falafel scene. Lilla Torg, framed by timber-framed houses, and the main square Stortorget, with its 1546 town hall, make up the old center. Converted fishermen's huts such as Fiskehoddorna serve fresh fish, and with more than 500 km of cycle paths a bike is the easiest way to get around.
Lund, under 20 minutes by train
The university town of Lund deserves half a day. Its Romanesque cathedral was consecrated in 1145, its university dates from 1666, and the Kulturen open-air museum is a highlight.
