The Queen City
Visiting Regina, the capital of Saskatchewan
Regina sits on a vast, flat plain in the middle of the Canadian prairies, yet it is far greener than you would expect: about 300,000 trees were planted here. Nicknamed the Queen City, it had 226,404 inhabitants at the 2021 census (249,217 in the metropolitan area), making it the second-largest city of the province after Saskatoon. It is a calm provincial capital with three strong cards: a unique link with the Mounties, one of the largest urban parks in North America and a real Indigenous cultural presence.
From Pile of Bones to capital
The spot was once known as Pile of Bones, a translation of its Cree name for the buffalo bones scattered there. In 1882 it was chosen as the seat of the North-West Territories and named after Queen Victoria; it became the capital of the new province of Saskatchewan when that province was created in 1905.

The Mounties
The RCMP Heritage Centre and Depot Division
Every Mountie in Canada starts here. Regina is home to the RCMP Academy, Depot Division, the national training centre of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Next door, the RCMP Heritage Centre, open since 2007, tells the story of the force from the founding of the North West Mounted Police in 1873 to today, with historic and modern displays, a forensic gallery and virtual and augmented reality exhibits.
Visiting
Academy tours run daily from May to August (Wikivoyage). Each summer the RCMP's mounted show, the Musical Ride, performs in the city.

Wascana Centre
A huge urban park around an artificial lake
The green heart of the city
In a landscape of flat farmland, Wascana Lake was created in the city centre to form one of the largest urban parks in North America, about 9.3 square kilometres. It was planned in a 100-year master plan by Minoru Yamasaki and Thomas Church. Its 104-hectare migratory bird sanctuary draws birdwatchers.
Beyond the lake
The park holds the Legislative Building, the Royal Saskatchewan Museum, the Science Centre, the MacKenzie Art Gallery and a university campus. The lake was dredged about five metres deeper in 2003-2004. In summer people stroll, picnic and eat on the waterfront patios.
Food and drink
Regina-style pizza, craft beer and global flavours
Regina's food scene is more varied than you might think. Regina-style pizza is found at Western Pizza 1976, and Wikivoyage names several addresses: the Bushwakker Pub and Brewing Company, in a century-old warehouse, brews its own beer and has live jazz and folk on weeknights; the Copper Kettle is known for Greek food; Crave Kitchen and Wine Bar offers upscale tapas and La Bodega shared plates, so book at weekends.
Market and beer
The Regina Farmers Market generally runs on Saturdays all year and also on Wednesdays from May to early October. For a beer on a patio, try Copperhead Brewing Co. The drinking age is 19.
Good to know

In autumn or winter you can catch the Regina Pats at the Brandt Centre.
