OGG, Kahului Airport, in the middle of the island

OGG

Kahului Airport (OGG)

Kahului Airport is Maui's main gateway and the state's second-largest commercial airport according to Wikivoyage (EN). It sits on the isthmus between the two volcanoes, next to Kahului, the island's commercial and harbour centre. From the airport, Honoapiilani Highway leads to Lahaina, Kaanapali and Kapalua, and Mokulele Highway to Kihei, Wailea and Makena according to Wikivoyage (EN). We give no exact driving times or fares: traffic varies a lot.

General information based on Wikivoyage (EN, DE) and Wikipedia (EN, FR, DE, ES); routes and schedules change, so check before you travel. We do not quote fares.

Maui is the second-largest island of the Hawaiian archipelago, at close to 1,900 km2 according to Wikipedia (EN, FR, DE); sources differ by a few dozen km2, so we stay approximate. It had 168,307 residents in the 2020 census according to Wikipedia (EN), and Kahului, with 28,219, is the main commercial hub. Its nickname, the Valley Isle, comes from the fertile isthmus between two volcanoes: Haleakala in the east and the West Maui Mountains in the west according to Wikipedia (EN, FR).

Tourism is the island's major industry according to Wikipedia (EN). Before flying to the mainland, bags go through an agricultural inspection: fresh fruit is generally not allowed to leave the islands according to Wikivoyage (EN). Smaller airports such as Kapalua and Hana handle a few local flights according to Wikivoyage (EN).

Haleakala, the Hana coast, southern beaches and sunsets

Maui is best understood by region: the centre around Kahului and Wailuku, the dry south from Kihei to Makena, the west around Lahaina, Kaanapali and Kapalua, the north-east coast to Hana, and the cool slopes of Upcountry. Five landscapes are illustrated; the Iao Valley and Lahaina are described in text.

Sunsets on the leeward coast

The west and south coasts of Maui are the driest on the island, sheltered from the trade winds according to Wikipedia (EN), and the big resorts are concentrated there according to Wikivoyage (EN). Neighbouring islands can be seen across the water, and sunsets over the ocean are among the highlights of a stay.

Kihei and the south coast

Kihei, on the south-west coast, has beaches and condos at lower prices than Kaanapali according to Wikivoyage (EN). It lies in the rain shadow of Haleakala and gets very little rain according to Wikipedia (DE), which makes it a coast for swimming and seaside walks.

The crater of Haleakala

Haleakala rises to 3,055 m according to Wikipedia (EN, DE), and several neighbouring islands can be seen from the summit according to Wikivoyage (EN). Bamboo forests on the Hana coast

The Road to Hana follows the north-east coast for about 90 km and can take up to three hours each way according to Wikivoyage (EN), because of the many bends and one-lane bridges. This rainy coast hides rainforest, waterfalls and trails through bamboo, such as those in the Kipahulu area according to Wikipedia (FR).

Wailea and Makena at dusk

Wailea and Makena are planned resort areas south of Kihei according to Wikivoyage (EN). Long sandy beaches open onto the ocean one after another, with the island's relief behind them, and the evening light is especially beautiful.

Iao Valley and Lahaina, in text

The Iao Valley near Wailuku is a deep green site reached by a short trail according to Wikivoyage (EN). Lahaina, a former whaling capital, was largely destroyed by a fire in August 2023 according to Wikipedia (EN, DE); out of respect for the community, check the current situation with official tourism websites before planning a visit.

Mountain roads

On the Road to Hana as well as up to the Haleakala summit, driving takes time and care; let local drivers pass, as they make the trip daily according to Wikivoyage (EN). Some rental companies restrict where their cars may go: read your contract.

Price level

Precautions

Respect the ocean: currents, shorebreak and big swells can be dangerous, especially in winter; follow signs and lifeguards. Protect turtles and coral and keep your distance from wildlife. Foreign travellers should check US entry requirements for their nationality.

Sea-level temperatures are steady, 23 to 31 degrees C in summer according to Wikipedia (DE). Summer trade winds bring a drier season to the lowlands according to Wikipedia (EN).

Autumn (September to October)
