Newark predates the United States by well over a century. It was founded in 1666 by a group of Puritan settlers from Connecticut, led by Robert Treat, who bought the land from the Hackensack Lenape and set out to build a community governed strictly by their own church. One of the settlers, Abraham Pierson, is credited with the name itself — a nod to "New Work," or possibly to his hometown of Newark-on-Trent in England, eventually shortened to what stuck. Newark's 19th and early 20th centuries were shaped by heavy industry — leather tanning, jewelry-making and a thriving beer-brewing scene fed by waves of German and Irish immigrants. That industrial momentum carried straight into aviation: Newark Metropolitan Airport opened on October 1, 1928 on reclaimed marshland, becoming the first major airport to serve the New York region and, for most of the following decade, the busiest airport in the world.

Opened in 1895 on the western edge of the city, Branch Brook Park has the distinction of being the first county park established anywhere in the United States. Its landscape was reworked in 1900 by the Olmsted firm, the same practice behind New York's Central Park, and today the 360-acre grounds hold over 5,000 cherry trees across eighteen-plus varieties — the largest cherry blossom collection in the country, ahead of Washington D.C.'s more famous display. The trees bloom for a few short weeks each April, drawing crowds for the annual Cherry Blossom Festival along the park's ponds and colonnades.

The Ironbound, Newark's own Little Portugal

East of Penn Station, hemmed in by rail lines that gave the district its name, the Ironbound is Newark's densest and most walkable neighborhood — home to roughly 55,000 residents and more than 170 restaurants along and around Ferry Street. Portuguese and Spanish immigrants began settling here in large numbers in the early 20th century, and their imprint is everywhere: charcoal-grilled seafood, custard tarts, and every June one of the largest Portuguese-heritage street festivals anywhere outside Portugal itself. It's a genuinely lived-in part of the city rather than a curated tourist strip, and it sits close enough to the train station to explore on foot before or after a flight.

A compact cultural core around Military Park

Within a few blocks of each other downtown sit three institutions that anchor the city's cultural life. The Newark Museum of Art, founded in 1909, is New Jersey's largest museum and holds standout collections of American art alongside Tibetan, African and Asian art rarely seen at this scale outside a major capital. Nearby, the New Jersey Performing Arts Center has staged Broadway touring productions and orchestral programs since 1997, and the Prudential Center — home to the NHL's New Jersey Devils — regularly pulls arena concerts that skip Manhattan altogether for a Newark date.

Ten minutes to downtown Newark, thirty to Manhattan

Newark Liberty International sits about 3 miles from downtown Newark and roughly 16 miles from Manhattan — and the free AirTrain monorail connects every terminal directly to Newark Penn Station in about ten minutes. From there, NJ Transit or Amtrak trains reach New York Penn Station in another 25 to 40 minutes, for around $16 including the AirTrain leg.
