Newark Liberty International (EWR)
Newark airport is about 7 km south of downtown (sources give between 5 and 8 km) and about 15 km from Manhattan. A monorail, AirTrain Newark, links the terminals to the airport rail station: from there, a NJ Transit train reaches Newark Penn Station downtown in about ten minutes and New York Penn Station in Manhattan in roughly 25 to 30 minutes. NJ Transit buses (route 62 and the limited-stop Go 28) serve downtown Newark, express buses run to Manhattan, and taxis charge a flat fee set before the trip according to the destination. Hotels near the airport often run their own shuttles.

Newark is New Jersey's largest city, founded in 1666 by Puritans from New Haven, with more than 300,000 residents. It lies just west of Manhattan, across the Hudson, on the Passaic River, and is home to one of the main container ports on the East Coast.
To be honest, many travellers only see Newark through the window of a connecting flight. For those who take the time to stop, the city has real strengths, described below, and Manhattan is about half an hour away by train from the airport.

The Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart
With its two towers, rose window and many stained glass windows (over 200 according to Wikivoyage), the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart towers over the north of the city, across from Branch Brook Park. Neo-Gothic in style, it is the mother church of the Archdiocese of Newark and became a basilica in 1995 during Pope John Paul II's visit. It is reachable by light rail.
Branch Brook Park in spring
Created in 1895 and designed by the Olmsted firm, Branch Brook Park is the oldest county park in the United States. It is best known for its blossoming Japanese cherry trees, more than 4,000 according to Wikivoyage (some sources count more), said to outnumber those in Washington. The Cherry Blossom Festival takes place in April; bloom dates vary from year to year.
The paths of Branch Brook Park
The park covers about 145 hectares of meadows, groves, lakes and gently sloping paths. You can walk or cycle here outside the blossom season too, with views of the cathedral. It is served by Newark's light rail.
The Pulaski Skyway, between Newark and Jersey City
This long steel bridge, built in 1938, spans the Passaic and Hackensack Rivers to connect Newark with Jersey City and the Holland Tunnel towards Lower Manhattan. It is a transit structure rather than a destination: you mostly see it from the road or from the riverbanks, ideally at dusk.

The historic Newark Penn Station is worth a look, as are Military Park in the heart of the city and Riverfront Park along the Passaic. Murals in the Ironbound add a street-art dimension to a walk. Newark Museum of Art
The largest museum in New Jersey according to Wikipedia: American and Tibetan art, a planetarium, a sculpture garden and the Ballantine House, an 1885 mansion that is a National Historic Landmark. Check opening times and prices before you visit.
Jazz, performing arts and reading
The Institute of Jazz Studies at Rutgers University-Newark (since 1962) is one of the world's major jazz archives; the jazz radio station WBGO broadcasts from downtown. NJPAC, opened in 1997, hosts the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, opera, concerts and theatre. The Newark Public Library holds more than a million volumes.

Ironbound, the Portuguese and Brazilian quarter
East of the station, the Ironbound is nicknamed "Little Portugal" and "Little Brazil"; Newark is said to have the largest Portuguese community in the United States. Train, light rail, bus and PATH from the main station
Newark Light Rail and buses
Newark's light rail links Penn Station with the cathedral, Branch Brook Park and Broad Street Station; a dense network of NJ Transit buses completes the picture. The centre is fairly pleasant on foot, especially around Penn Station and the Ironbound.
Train, PATH and Amtrak
The PATH line links Newark Penn Station with Jersey City and the World Trade Center. NJ Transit and Amtrak trains (Northeast Regional, Acela) serve New York, Philadelphia, Washington and Boston. Be careful not to mix up the two "Penn Stations", Newark's and New York's.
Manhattan and Brooklyn
Manhattan is about half an hour away by train or PATH; Brooklyn is then reachable by subway, as a day trip.
