Origin story
The Town: a port city across the bay
Founded in the 1850s during the Gold Rush, Oakland grew fast thanks to its position directly across the bay from San Francisco: close enough to share the water, far enough to build a completely different character. Since 1927 the Port of Oakland has been one of the busiest ports on the West Coast, and the city often enjoys sunnier weather than its famous neighbour, which is more prone to fog.
Locals simply call it the Town. North-east of the centre, the small city of Piedmont, surrounded by Oakland, is a residential area known for its quiet streets and large houses.
History
Where the Black Panther Party began
In October 1966, Merritt College students Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale founded the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense in Oakland, a movement that began by monitoring police conduct in Black neighbourhoods before developing community programs, including free breakfasts for children. The Oakland Museum of California traces this legacy, and several guided walking tours cover the key sites of this history.

Lake Merritt and Jack London Square
Right in the middle of the city, Lake Merritt is a tidal lagoon dammed off from the estuary in 1869; in 1870 it became the first officially designated wildlife refuge in the United States. It is ringed by a park that is popular for walking and jogging.
On the waterfront, Jack London Square pays tribute to the writer who grew up in Oakland, with the historic Heinold's First and Last Chance saloon at its heart, one of the oldest bars on the bay, where the author was a regular. The Port of Oakland's giant cranes can be glimpsed from the quays.

From OAK, an automated shuttle links the airport to BART's Coliseum station, where trains run to Downtown Oakland and San Francisco: allow about half an hour to Downtown Oakland and longer to San Francisco (indicative times, to be checked). Taxis and ride-hailing apps make the trip directly; times vary with freeway traffic. From SFO, BART also reaches Oakland with one transfer.
