Tangier-Ibn Battouta Airport is at Boukhalef, south-west of the city, 12 km from the centre according to Wikivoyage (EN) and about 15 km according to Wikipedia (FR, ES), so expect a dozen to fifteen kilometres. It receives flights from the largest cities in Western Europe and Morocco, many operated by budget carriers, according to Wikivoyage (EN). An Alsa airport shuttle runs to the railway station from about 06:00 to midnight per Wikivoyage (EN); at the exit, grand taxis charge fixed prices by destination. For onward travel, the Al Boraq high-speed line has linked Tangier with Casablanca via Kenitra and Rabat since 2018, taking just over two hours end to end, and Rabat is only 1 hour 20 away, according to Wikivoyage (EN, DE).
Approximate distances and durations from Wikivoyage (EN, DE) and Wikipedia (FR, ES); timetables change with the season, so check them before you travel. We do not quote fares.
Tangier is in northern Morocco at the entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar, washed by both the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, according to Wikipedia (ES). On a clear day you can see the Spanish coast, about 30 km away, per Wikivoyage (EN). The city was under joint international control from 1925 to 1956, a period that attracted diplomats, writers and artists, including Paul Bowles, according to Wikivoyage (EN).
Wikivoyage (EN) says Tangier has rather few individual sights: the whole city can be considered one big sight, with the medina, the port and the beachfront walk. Wikipedia (DE) stresses its Mediterranean character, born of the coexistence of European, Muslim and Jewish cultures and visible in the medina's architecture, with its street-facing windows and balconies.
Landmarks
The medina, the Kasbah, the Petit Socco and the bay of Tangier
Wikipedia (DE) recalls that the Romans ringed the hill of today's Kasbah quarter with a wall in the 3rd and 4th centuries, which the Portuguese reinforced in the 15th and 16th centuries. Today the medina is probably Tangier's biggest attraction, according to Wikivoyage (EN). The places below are illustrated.
The medina above the harbour
The medina, the old town with its narrow streets, is probably the main attraction: you will very likely get lost, warn Wikivoyage (EN) and Wikipedia (DE). It climbs the hillside above the marina, and the Petit Socco, or Socco Chico, is its heart, per Wikivoyage (DE, EN). Touts and shopkeepers are eager, but a polite, firm no is usually enough.

Houses, balconies and arcades
Wikipedia (DE) describes an architecture marked by typical Mediterranean features: street-facing windows and balconies. White buildings with balconies and arcades rise on old stone walls, witnesses to the city's mixed history.

Wooden doors and small squares
Wooden pointed-arch doors, pale stone walls and cobbled squares appear around every corner. The Grande Mosquée, from the 17th century, whose minaret rises above the city walls towards the sea, is in the medina, per Wikivoyage (EN, DE).

The old town facing the sea
On the cliff, white houses and stone walls overlook the coastal road. The Kasbah, the former Sultan's palace, has a terrace on its north side with views over the port and, on a clear day, the Spanish coast, according to Wikivoyage (EN).

The bay and Boulevard Mohammed VI
A long sandy beach lines the bay, with Boulevard Mohammed VI running from the port to Malabata, per Wikivoyage (EN, DE); Wikivoyage (EN) recommends a simple walk along it to understand what the city is famed for. Wikivoyage (DE) mentions the municipal beach and Malabata beach.

Tangier by night
In the evening, lights trace the corniche road and the harbour. Wikivoyage (DE) notes that the sea breeze draws many residents outdoors, with night temperatures of 17 to 25 C from June to September.

Ibn Battuta and Cape Spartel
Tangier is the birthplace of the great traveller Ibn Battuta, whose tomb is listed among the medina's sights by Wikivoyage (EN). About 15 km to the west, Cape Spartel is where the Atlantic and the Mediterranean meet; the Caves of Hercules lie nearby, according to Wikivoyage (FR) and Wikipedia (DE, EN).
Museums and culture
A sultan's palace, an American legation and galleries
The Kasbah Museum
The Kasbah Museum is housed in the former Sultan's palace: it shows artefacts from the Phoenician period to modern times, and the building and garden are also worth seeing, according to Wikivoyage (EN). Wikipedia (DE) cites a mosaic from Volubilis among its prize pieces.
American Legation and art
The American Legation Museum, in the medina, is presented as the only historic landmark of the United States abroad and has a wing devoted to the writer Paul Bowles, per Wikivoyage (EN). The Fondation Lorin is an art museum, and several galleries around the Grand Socco host temporary exhibitions, according to Wikivoyage (EN) and Wikipedia (DE).
Opening hours
Opening hours vary between winter and summer and we do not quote ticket prices: check on the spot before you go.
Food and drink
Fish from the port, tagines, paella and mint tea
Fish and Spanish influence
The port supplies plenty of fish (red mullet, sole, squid, prawns); Spanish influence shows in the restaurants, with paella, and couscous is eaten on Fridays, according to Wikivoyage (FR).
Tagines and tea
Tagines, couscous and mint tea are the Maghreb specialities highlighted by Wikivoyage (EN, ES).
Street food
Across the city, stalls serve bread rolls filled with vegetables and fries, called bocadillo, per Wikivoyage (DE); Wikivoyage (EN) also mentions egg and pepper sandwiches, fresh orange juice and chickpea cakes. In the evening, the plaza next to the CTM bus station is surrounded by cafes and restaurants.
Getting around
On foot in the medina, along the boulevards in town
On foot
The city is relatively compact: walking is perhaps the best way to see it, and in the medina the only way, according to Wikivoyage (EN).
Main roads
Two main roads structure the new town: Boulevard Mohammed V, which starts near the medina, and Boulevard Mohammed VI along the beachfront from the port to Malabata, per Wikivoyage (EN). Petits taxis and grands taxis run in the city.
To Spain and the rest of Morocco
Ferries link Tangier with Spain (Algeciras, Tarifa), according to Wikivoyage (EN) and Wikipedia (FR), and the high-speed train goes to Rabat and Casablanca. Check timetables before you travel.
