Indore is the largest city and commercial capital of Madhya Pradesh, on the southern edge of the Malwa Plateau, at about 550 m above sea level (Wikipedia, FR; Wikivoyage, EN). It is not a classic tourist destination, but it has documented strengths: the palaces of the Maratha Holkar dynasty, renowned street food and a reputation as a very clean city, often ranked at the top of India's national Swachh Survekshan programme (Wikipedia, EN). Wikivoyage (EN) describes a happy blend of historical past and rapid modernisation. Quoted populations vary widely with the boundaries used: we do not publish a figure.
For planning, SniperAir monitors flight prices to Indore (IDR) and alerts you; it does not sell or book tickets. As with any destination, read the official information from your departure country on entry rules, health and insurance.
Airport and getting into town
Devi Ahilyabai Holkar airport, about 8 km from the centre
Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport (IDR)
Wikivoyage (EN) and Wikipedia (FR, DE) put the airport about 8 km west of the centre. Wikivoyage adds that the city has direct flights to Mumbai and Delhi, with daily services; connections change with the seasons, so check them before booking.
Distance according to Wikivoyage (EN) and Wikipedia (FR, DE). We publish no journey time or taxi fare: the amounts quoted by sources date from different years.
To reach the centre, taxis and ride-hailing apps are available; Wikivoyage (EN) recommends booking in advance if you have a flight or train to catch. Indore also has a main station, Indore Junction, with rail links to Mumbai, Delhi, Bhopal and Ahmedabad.
Wikivoyage (EN) mentions a metro with a first section running in the north-west of the city; Wikipedia (DE) announces a future airport connection. Check the state of the network before relying on it. To enter India, visa rules depend on your nationality: read the official information.
Landmarks and icons
Rajwada, Lal Bagh and the Patalpani waterfalls
Indore keeps the memory of the Holkars, who ruled until their state joined India on 16 June 1948 (Wikivoyage, EN). These are the places pictured below.
Rajwada Palace
Rajwada is a seven-storey palace in the heart of the city: the lower three floors are stone, the upper ones wood, with a mix of Muslim, Maratha and French styles (Wikivoyage, EN). Renovated, it reopened in February 2023 according to Wikipedia (EN). Lit up at night, notably during festivals, it is one of the city's symbols. Construction dates quoted vary by source: we do not publish them.

Lal Bagh Palace
Begun in 1886 under Tukoji Rao Holkar II and built in several phases, this palace of Italian Renaissance inspiration was one of the grandest monuments the Holkars left (Wikivoyage, EN; Wikipedia, EN). It is now run as a museum. Completion dates differ between sources: we do not quote them.

The Lal Bagh interiors
Inside, the state rooms keep painted ceilings, woodwork and decoration that Wikipedia (EN) partly credits to English workshops. The areas open, the days and the hours vary: check before going.

The Patalpani waterfalls
About 35 km from Indore, the Patalpani waterfall drops into a rocky bowl ringed by hills (Wikivoyage, EN). Like all the falls in the area, it runs strongest during the monsoon, from July to September. Stay behind barriers and follow local instructions.

Also worth seeing: the chhatris, Holkar cenotaphs on the banks of the Khan river, Kanch Mandir, a Jain temple decorated with glass, Khajrana Ganesh Temple, Bada Ganpati and the 1904 town hall (Wikivoyage, EN).
Museums and culture
Museums and culture: Parmar sculpture and a palace-museum
The Central Museum
Wikivoyage (EN) presents the Indore museum as holding fine Parmar sculptures from Hinglajgarh, along with coins, arms and armour. Opening hours and closing days change: check before going. We give no ticket prices.

Chappan Dukan
Chappan Dukan (56 shops) gathers 56 food stalls over about 200 m in the Palasia area. According to Wikipedia (EN), it was redeveloped in 2020 as a pedestrian street and recognised in 2021 by India's food safety authority for hygiene.
