Nagpur is a large city in central India, in Maharashtra, the third largest in the state and its winter capital (Wikipedia, FR). It is nicknamed the Orange City for its orange trade and the Tiger Capital because several tiger reserves lie nearby (Wikipedia, EN). It is also a major site of the Dalit Buddhist movement, with Deekshabhoomi, and presents itself as the geographical centre of the subcontinent, with the Zero Mile Stone (Wikipedia, EN; Wikivoyage, EN). It is not a classic tourist destination, so this page keeps to what is actually documented. Population figures vary with source and year: we do not publish one.

For planning, SniperAir monitors flight prices to Nagpur (NAG) and alerts you; it does not sell or book tickets. As with any destination, read the official information from your departure country on entry rules, health and insurance.

Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar airport, about 7 km from the centre

NAG

Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport (NAG)

Wikivoyage (EN) places the airport 7 km from the centre, with a station on the metro's Orange Line. It is linked to several large Indian cities, including Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Indore and Pune, and to a few international destinations. Services change with the seasons: check them before booking.

Distance according to Wikivoyage (EN). We publish no journey time or taxi fare: sources give no reliable time and the amounts quoted date from different years.

Nagpur Junction station is very well connected: Wikivoyage (EN) says the big Indian metropolises are roughly an overnight train ride away, thanks to the city's central position. Taxis and ride-hailing apps complete the picture.

To enter India, visa rules depend on your nationality: read your own country's official information before booking anything.

Deekshabhoomi, the Zero Mile Stone, lakes and science

Nagpur is explored through a few understated but singular landmarks: a major stupa of modern Buddhism, a geographical marker and lakes. These are the places pictured below.

Deekshabhoomi

This is where B. R. Ambedkar and a very large number of followers converted to Buddhism on 14 October 1956 (Wikipedia, EN). The monument is a white domed stupa that Wikipedia (EN) describes as the largest hollow stupa in the world, rated an A-grade tourist place by the state of Maharashtra. Crowds gather every year for Dhamma Chakra Pravartan Din; outside those days the site is quiet. Respectful dress is expected.

Ambazari Lake

Wikipedia (EN) makes it the largest of the city's eleven lakes: it was built in 1870 under the Bhonsle dynasty to supply Nagpur with water, and the Nag river rises here. The neighbouring garden and the lakeside paths make it a place to unwind; at sunrise you can see birds and small boats.

Futala Lake

Wikivoyage (EN) mentions this lake as an evening outing, with food vendors and a view over the water, near the Satpuda Botanical Garden. The mood changes between day and late afternoon.

The Raman Science Centre

This interactive science centre is named after the Nobel laureate C. V. Raman. Wikivoyage (EN) compares it with Mumbai's science centre; it also includes a planetarium. Opening hours and days vary: check before going.

The most unusual landmark is the Zero Mile Stone, a monument marking the geographical centre of colonial India, from which the British measured distances across the subcontinent, according to the 1907 Great Trigonometrical Survey (Wikivoyage, EN; Wikipedia, FR). It stands in the city and is not pictured here.

Museums in Nagpur: one of India's oldest museums, science and railways

The Nagpur Central Museum

Wikivoyage (EN) describes one of India's oldest museums, founded in 1863 and known as Ajab Bangla, with fossils, coins, ancient inscriptions, sculpture, arms and tribal objects. Opening hours and closing days change: check before going. We give no ticket prices.

The Raman Science Centre

An interactive centre created to spread a scientific outlook, with a planetarium (Wikivoyage, EN).

The Narrow Gauge Rail Museum

Wikivoyage (EN) mentions a railway museum with old steam engines, coaches and a toy train in a garden.

Buddhist heritage

Deekshabhoomi, the Dragon Palace temple in Kamptee and a Vipassana centre (Wikipedia, EN) complete the visit for anyone interested in Buddhist traditions.

Oranges, Saoji cooking and food streets

The Nagpur orange

Wikipedia (EN) stresses the fame of Nagpur's oranges, behind many drinks and santra barfi, an orange confection. Wikivoyage (EN) also advises trying orange burfi, a milk sweet flavoured with orange. We give no harvest calendar: the sources we consulted do not state one.

Saoji cooking

Spicy Saoji cooking is a local speciality (Wikivoyage, EN). In the Momin pura district several restaurants serve biryani and non-vegetarian dishes; the district is lively during Ramadan.

Food streets

Street carts selling pani puri, chaat and Indian-style noodles are common around Shaheed Chowk, near Futala Lake and in several districts. Choose busy stalls and prefer bottled water; we name no brands or addresses.

Auto rickshaws, apps and a two-line metro

Auto rickshaws and apps

Wikivoyage (EN) describes the yellow-and-black auto rickshaws as the best way to get around; some drivers overcharge tourists, so bargain or ask for advice. Ride-hailing apps work almost everywhere.

Metro

Nagpur's metro has two lines, Orange and Aqua, with an interchange at Sitabuldi (Wikivoyage, EN). Check the state of the network before relying on it.

Buses

City buses are common but sometimes crowded, and you need to know the route numbers (Wikivoyage, EN).

A budget to check, unstable figures

Price level

We publish no ranges or tariffs: the sources we consulted give no recent, cross-checked amounts for Nagpur. Hotels and restaurants range from basic to high-end.

Flights

The flight is the most variable item. SniperAir monitors prices to NAG and compares them with the route's history, but it does not sell or book tickets. A connection is common depending on your departure city: create several alerts to compare.

Health and safety

The usual precautions of a large city apply. Before any trip, read the official information from your departure country on health, insurance and the situation on the ground.
